Max is an adoptable male German Shepherd looking for a home at Los Angeles County - Lancaster in Lancaster, California. He is fully grown and medium in size. He entered the play yard with soft body language. He was approached by a male Pitbull and exchanged a soft greeting with him. He tolerated him lingering in his face and offered no corrections or warnings for space. He began to calmly roam the yard and explore. He was tolerant of dogs trailing him to sniff him. He continued to exchange soft greetings when dogs approached him. He remained calm and social for the rest of his time in the yard, but he appeared more comfortable around the calmer dogs. There were dogs playing during his time in the yard, but he did not engage in or entice any play. He was very wary of the handlers in the yard and would constantly run to create space from where they were. Max is social with the other dogs, but he displayed no play style at this time and would likely do best with a calmer dog. See handling assessment for further stipulations. The handler knelt and called to him, but he did not approach. The handler slowly picked up his leash and knelt a little closer to him. He then pancakedto the ground. He allowed the handler to pet his head, but he is head shy and would flinch. He allowed the handler to touch his ears with no reaction. He was still wary, and the handler had to make slowmovements. When the handler touched his back paws, he pulled them away and was licking his lips. When the handler touched his tail, he tucked it. When the handler touched his front paws, he pulled them away and was licking his lips. When the handler tried to check his teeth, he head whipped toward their hand. He was retumed to his kennel without issue. He appears very under socialized with people. He will also need further socialization to walking on leash. Due to is lack of socialization with people and his handling sensitivities, he will be designated as rescue only at this time.
