River is a highly social dog who enjoys interacting with both staff and other dogs and is considered a Playgroup Rockstar. Unfortunately, River is having a difficult time coping with the Care Center environment. He has become increasingly aroused and is frequently grabbing and biting the leash during walks and handling. Staff have attempted to redirect and refocus him using treats, but these strategies are becoming less effective as his arousal increases. Medically, River is overweight. River was originally surrendered into care due to allergies. He presented as social with handlers, easy to leash, and enjoyed treats and toys. He was adopted but then returned due to medical concerns. Another adopter returned River due to destructive tendencies - chewing on walls. He has remained social with handlers and staff and attends playgroup with other dogs that match his play style. As his length of stay has progressed, River has started to leash bite, climbing up the lead and grabbing a staff member's hand while leash biting. He also has mounted a handler during an interaction. Due to the concerns displayed in care and in his previous homes, we recommend that River be placed in an adult-only home without cats or other small pets through a New Hope rescue partner that can allow him the time and space to decompress at his own pace and address any challenges he presents with outside of care with a positive reinforcement-only certified professional trainer.
