Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Blessing was at the back of the kennel with a fearful demeanor. Her body was tense, her ears were back, her eyes were wide and concerned, and her tail was tucked. She barked rapidly, bared her teeth, lunged and retreated, and snapped at the leash in a defensive manner. The runner stepped into the kennel, and Blessing began to dodge the leash while yelping. The runner moved slowly, and was able to gently drop the leash over her head. She walked slowly with constant reassurance from the runner, and warily allowed the runner to collar her when he moved slowly. In the catch pen, her body was tense, her eyes were wide, and her tail was tucked. She entered the yard with a timid demeanor, and spent several minutes avoiding the other dogs while snapping at them defensively. She eventually began to relax, and engaged in play with the other dogs. She offered appropriate corrections when necessary. She was wary of the handlers at first, but eventually began to approach the handlers to solicit petting. Blessing is tolerant of the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and prefers a push/pull playstyle. She was moved to the side yard, and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. She approached the handler with a timid demeanor, soft eyes, a lowered head, and a low tail wag. She allowed the handler to pet her whole body, displaying mild discomfort when her rear legs were touched. However, she did not growl or try to bite, and remained easy to handle throughout the assessment. She was easily returned to her kennel when the assessment was over. She growled softly, urinated on herself, and trembled fearfully. The runner stepped partially into the kennel to leash her, but Blessing began snapping at the leash before hiding behind the door. The runner was able to gently toss the leash over her head. She required gentle pressure on the leash to exit the kennel. She pulled strongly on leash to get away from the runner, and then yelped and flailed when she felt tension on the leash. She bared her teeth, yelped, snapped, and flailed when the runner tried to collar her. She could not be safely collared or handled at this time, and was returned to kennel. A second attempt will be made at a later date.
