This pet needs emergency placement. Please click here to go to our emergency placement page for more information. This pet is available only through ACC New Hope partners. To adopt or foster, please complete the pre-screener form below. Inquiries sent directly to ACC will not receive a response. Pre-Screener Form Xola is at risk due to behavior concerns. Xola was being walked by a volunteer when she was allowed to approach a staff member; on approaching, Xola jumped up on the staff member and bit her in the chest area; this was a bite and release and did not break skin, but tore three layers of clothing. Xola has previously shown fearful behavior while in the care center, barking and lunging at staff on intake. While she reverts to fearful behavior on encountering unfamiliar people, with known handlers she has shown social and affiliative behavior. Medically, Xola is apparently healthy. Xola was surrendered to the care centers due to her previous owner's housing situation. Her previous owner describes her as an affectionate, active, and playful dog who loves water and car rides. They report that she growled and barked at unfamiliar people and dogs on walks. During her time at the care center, Xola has showed fearful and defensive behavior, lunging and barking at staff on intake, and in a separate incident, jumping and biting a staff member when approaching on a walk; the bite did not break skin but tore through several layers of clothing. In calmer settings with known handlers, Xola has shown social behavior and solicited attention from staff. Due to noted concerns, we recommend placement in an adult only home with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home. Pop-Up Promo! ACC is over capacity, so I'm currently living in a pop-up crate. My adoption fees are waived, and my adoption comes with a $50 Chewy gift card. Meet Xola! Xola came to ACC when her owner could no longer care for her. This sweet girl is looking for someone who understands that trust takes time and that the best friendships are built one step at a time. Once she feels comfortable, Xola enjoys attention, treats, and spending time with her favorite people. She is searching for a patient adopter who will help her feel safe and confident as she settles into her new life. My Ideal Home Xola would thrive with an experienced adopter who is willing to continue building her confidence through positive reinforcement training. She will benefit from a calm, predictable environment, slow introductions, and someone who understands canine body language. With patience and consistency, Xola can continue learning that the world is a safe and rewarding place. Good with Other Pets? Xola has lived with dogs previously and can be playful and social with familiar canine friends. She can be unsure around unfamiliar dogs and may need slow, thoughtful introductions to help her feel comfortable. Continued positive reinforcement training will help her build confidence around new furry friends. Good with Kids? Due to Xola's history of feeling overwhelmed with unfamiliar people and her potential for defensive behaviors, an adult-only home is recommended at this time. She would do best with people who can respect her boundaries and allow her to approach new experiences at her own pace. Things to Know Xola is a smart and spirited pup who is learning that new things don't have to be scary! She can be a little selective with her friendships, but once she trusts you, she enjoys attention, treats, and companionship. Xola is also working on her manners and leash skills, so her future family should be ready to help her shine with patience, structure, and plenty of encouragement.
