Adam
Great Dane (mix breed)
Urgent: 1 Day Left
Scheduled: October 3, 2026
Reason: Medical
Adam is an adoptable male Great Dane looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is senior and large in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to medical. Adopting Adam, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.
Adam ACCT-A-263402 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to medical concerns. Adam must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3RD at 10AM. Should Adam's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Meet Adam, a sweet senior gentleman who is looking for someone to give him the soft landing he deserves. Adam came to the shelter after being found as a stray, and his finder reported that he appeared malnourished, scared, and had difficulty walking. Despite everything he has been through, Adam has shown us what a gentle soul he is. He has soft eyes, a loose body, and enjoys gentle affection and attention from his caregivers. Adam is a quiet, low-key companion who is happy to take things at his own pace. He is easy to leash and walks nicely once he's up and moving. He enjoys treats and is food motivated, and he has been tolerant of handling from his caregivers. When he meets other dogs, Adam has shown polite, neutral interactions and is able to calmly move away on his own. Adam is an advanced senior and is experiencing significant mobility challenges. He has arthritis affecting his hind legs and suspected IVDD, which make getting in and out of his kennel difficult. He currently needs assistance getting in and out, but he has been very cooperative and allows his caregivers to support or lift him when needed. He has started medication to help manage his discomfort and will need continued veterinary care outside of the shelter. Adam is looking for an adopter or rescue who understands the needs of a senior dog and is prepared to provide him with ongoing medical care, comfort, and plenty of patience. A calm home where he can rest, move at his own pace, and enjoy his golden years would be ideal. This sweet old guy has already been through so much, and what he needs now is someone willing to see the gentle, loving dog underneath it all. If you have experience caring for senior dogs and can give Adam the medical support and comfortable retirement he deserves, please consider giving this special boy a chance. Video: *NEW* Katarina & Adam having a nice fence meet: Monii and Adam: Behavior Notes: Per staff 10/1: Kennel Presentation: Laying down in his kennel when I approached. Slowly got up and came to the front with soft eyes, mid tail wags, loose body. Took a treat a little snatchy. Leash Skills: Easy to leash, needed assistance stepping down to exit kennel, allowed me to help support him with a loose body, mid tail wags. Once out walked loose leash. Sociability: Went to the bathroom right away outside. Allowed all handling with mid to low tail wags, ears back, soft eyes. Moved away when I stopped. Food motivated and takes treats a little snatchy so open palm is best. Play: n/a Dog Interaction: Met Monii, sniffed and was sniffed, moved away on his own. Return to Kennel: Walked back loose leash, needed assistance getting back into kennel. Allowed me to lift him up with a loose body and once in kennel leash was removed easily by hand. Color Level: Blue Per staff 10/1 (Regarding meet with Monii): Good greetings. Soft eyes, ears to the side and mid tail. Able to move away on his own Per staff 9/30: Adam was standing when I approached his kennel and then laid down. I sat at the door of his kennel and tossed a treat towards him which he didn't notice. He curled up and had no reaction when I pet his head and back. Per staff 9/30: Dog was sweet, allowed me to lift him out the car and I was petting his head. Per finder 9/30: Adam's finder noted that he seemed abandoned, afraid of people, had injured legs, difficulty walking, and was malnourished. He was overall scared, shy, and quiet. Medical Notes: 9/30: Adam is an advanced senior dog with significant mobility issues. He has hindlimb osteoarthritis and suspected IVDD, with a stiff and weak hind-end gait, decreased range of motion and crepitus in his hips and stifles, delayed proprioception, and discomfort along his thoracolumbar spine. He also has nuclear sclerosis in both eyes, heavy dental calculus and gingivitis, temporal muscle wasting, and a flea infestation. His bloodwork showed mild anemia (HCT 33%) but was otherwise without significant abnormalities. He has been started on gabapentin 200 mg twice daily for pain management. Due to his advanced age and significant mobility concerns, he would benefit from an experienced adopter who is able to take him offsite for ongoing veterinary care, and expedited placement is recommended as he is likely to decline in the shelter environment. ' Due to being significantly overcapacity with dogs and cats and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
