About Calypso

Calypso is an adoptable female American Staffordshire Terrier looking for a home at Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control in West Palm Beach, Florida. She is a young adult and large in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 2 days left, listed due to other. Adopting Calypso, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Intake Info: Beautiful Calypso came to the shelter in June after being abandoned and left tied to a fence. She did not have a microchip, so we had no owner info. Medical: Spayed female who is heartworm negative. History of dermatitis and UTI. Otherwise, healthy girl. HS-2. The vet noted he was slightly apprehensive but was good for his physical exam. Behaviors Observed: Calypso is a highly trainable, assertive dog who responds well to body pressure, verbal interrupters, treat trails, and pet corrector, but she continues to show leash and barrier reactivity and requires careful supervision around other dogs. She has made strong progress with her kennel-door routine, sitting patiently, following treat trails in and out of her kennel, and remaining focused even when treats are spaced closely; however, she is more likely to react when the treats are farther apart or unavailable. In playgroups, Calypso can engage in push-pull and rough play and has shown improved social skills with several dogs, but she may become stiff, fixated, or overly controlling, particularly with playful, passive, or unfamiliar dogs. She has pinned or corrected dogs, sometimes responding to perceived weakness or movement, and was involved in an altercation with Benjilector after a stiff greeting, resulting in puncture wounds to Calypso. Staff recommend one-on-one introductions, rotating playmates, closely monitoring her interactions, and continuing to build her social skills gradually. Calypso enjoys tug and is learning to release the toy on 'out,' sit, and wait before play resumes; developing this appropriate outlet and impulse control may help reduce her reactivity and improve her ability to make good choices around other dogs. Request to Rescues: Calypso is a bold, high-energy dog with a big personality and a wealth of potential. While she is affectionate with humans, she is currently navigating the stresses of shelter life and needs a rescue partner experienced with assertive dogs. Calypso is a smart learner who excels at tug-of-war and is making great strides with her impulse control and kennel manners. Though she is a confident and rowdy playmate who loves \"push and pull\" games, she requires a handler who can provide clear boundaries and structured socialization to help her manage her assertiveness. With her intelligence and athletic drive, Calypso will be a loyal companion for a dedicated owner who can help her transition from the shelter to a stable, loving home.
