Henry

Henry is an adoptable male American Staffordshire Terrier looking for a home at San Antonio Animal Care Services in San Antonio, Texas. He is a young adult and medium in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Henry, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

07/27/2026 Heartworm Test NEG Heartworm Smear Dog displayed sociability by slowly coming over for affection with a wagging tail and loose body. He is easily leashed and walked outside where he jumps up for affection and gentle play with all handlers. He knows \"sit\" and is highly interested in treats. He greets other dogs with a loose body and wagging tail and walks away on his own. He is easily returned to kennel. 07/28/2026 Play Group: Dog displays sociability with all handlers and is able to be leashed and walked outside. He walks into the yard with a tense body and raised hackles and allows other dogs to greet him. He adjusts and greets both male and female dogs appropriately with a loose body and wagging tail. He is tense with a high tail and raised hackles greeting a specific male dog where he is easily redirected by handlers. He adjusts by walking around the yard independently. As the same male dog is being led out of the yard, A816864 rushes towards him with a frontal aligned body, biting him on the back of the neck with a tense body and raised hackles where he is difficult to remove from the interaction. Once his leash is secured, he is able to be removed where he lunges towards other dogs nearby while walking out of the yard. He is easy to return to his kennel. Dog remained laying in bed as I approached office and began waggin tail and rolling over to offer his belly. He was easy to leash and walk out. He was offered a tennis ball and seems to have fairly high toy drive and carried the ball around with him for part of the walk. We practiced \"drop it\" where we exchanged the ball for a high value treat. We walked near where other dogs were located. He remained easy to manage on leash. Once we were about 10 ft from a small/medium sized dog that was in a play yard he began to fixate on the dog and pull but was able to redirect without much difficulty using kissy sounds, treats, and the tennis ball bouncing on the ground behind him. Given dog's history, a single pet home is highly recommended.
