Amex
American Staffordshire Terrier (mix breed)
Urgent: 3 Days Left
Scheduled: October 8, 2026
Reason: Lack of Space
Amex is an adoptable female American Staffordshire Terrier looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is fully grown and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 3 days left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Amex, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.
Amex ACCT-A-261069 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Amex must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8TH at 10AM. Should Amex's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Amex is a sweet, playful girl who has been at ACCT Philly since arriving as a stray on September 7th. She has lots of energy and loves getting outside to run, play ball, and explore, but she settles nicely after some exercise and is happiest when she can spend time with her people. Amex loves treats, toys, pets, and cuddles, and volunteers describe her as affectionate, snuggly, and very sweet. She can be a little jumpy and mouthy when excited, but she responds well to her handlers and has shown that she is very food motivated and easy to redirect. Amex has shown challenges interacting with other dogs and would benefit from a home that can provide structure, continued training, and careful management around other dogs. She has also shown that she can be highly engaged with her handler and eager to learn. Due to her length of stay, Amex is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. Super sweet: Playgroup 9/11: Lady Luck, Ichigo, Leela, Brown Lee, Amex [scuffle off-camera] Amex and Melo fence meet: Shazza and Amex Fence Meet: Amex meets Shazza: BEHAVIOR NOTES: Per staff 10/3: Jumping in kennel so took a minute to leash. Pulling mildly towards dogs in cages going outside, was doing so more strongly coming back inside. Very food motivated, looking for food on the ground as we walked and even lightly grabbed by treat pouch once outside. Tossed treats on the ground to avoid grabbing at my fingers. While walking inside to get outside, we passed by an office with a fake husky dog in it. She approached quickly and forward, jumping on the dogs head biting repeatedly. Used a moment where she opened her mouth to regrip to pull her away. (While evaluations with fake dogs are controversial, they usually are very good at predicting when a dog will aggress towards another dog at a close distance, which in this case that happened). Very handler oriented, turned towards me often throughout the time outside. At the fence with Shazza, mainly ignored. Orchestrated a meeting, when it was her turn to sniff Shazza she muzzle punched her back end, no sniffing or curiosity. Ended interaction there as it was likely to escalate if we kept going and Shazza was not showing she wanted any further interaction. Amex shows a high level of food motivation and ability to be redirected from other dogs, and a high level of trainability. She has a multitude of scarring indicative of intense dog fight(s), needs a home that can safely manage this and work with a positive reinforcement trainer. Per volunteer 10/3: I took Amex for a walk and we played ball in the yard. She was high energy when we first got out, but settled after we played for about five minutes. She was very sweet and loved treats. It was easy for me to get her in and out of the kennel and she was easy to walk. Very sweet girl! Per volunteer 10/2: High energy but calmed after ball and walk, very snuggle and sweet. Per volunteer 9/30: Lots of energy. Mildly mouthy and jumpy. Per volunteer 9/29: High energy. Per volunteer 9/27: High energy. Mild issues getting out of kennel. Amex was very excited and pulled on leash a bit. Very playful in yard and loved being petted, so sweet. Per staff 9/26: Medium energy. Super sweet. Per volunteer 9/25: Medium energy. Sweet girl, lots of energy. Per volunteer 9/24: Medium energy. Puppy-ish. Little bit mouthy when walking, jumpy, settles when sitting for pets. Per volunteer 9/22: Medium-high energy. Slightly mouthy. Playful with other dogs but doesn't bark. Very cuddly. Loves chew toys. Treat motivated. Per volunteer 9/21: Medium energy. Sweet girl, zigzags, loves petting. Per volunteer 9/20: Slightly mouthy and jumpy. Enjoys stuffed toys. Settled down to sit in my lap. Per volunteer 9/19: High energy. A bit hard on leash, very hyper... Affectionate, loves to carry her toys, has lots of energy. Per staff 9/18: Cutie excited lady!! Greeted me with a very loose and wiggly body when I first approached her kennel and then very easily leashed her on the first try. On leash, she zigzags quite a lot as she's very excited to explore everything on all sides of you. She tends to pick up anything she can find, including food, wrappers, etc. Definitely has some puppy tendencies when we got to the yard she was nibbling my hands just affectionately. In the play yard she loves toys and allows me to approach her with no problem. She is definitely mouthy on my hands and my clothes however it's all wiggly and loose when she does it. She is pretty interested in treats, but not able to focus on them for a long, especially when there's a toy around. She voluntarily went back into her kennel, and I was easily able to unleash with the clip method. We walked past a shelter cat on the way in, and Amex saw him that didn't react at all. Per volunteer 9/17: Very good girl. Per staff, playgroup 9/11: Steer Test: 4/5 with water and 0 with can. Came in with a tense body. Went up to Leela with ears forward, mid tail. Got on top of her low growling and air snapping towards her as the handlers separated them. Per staff 9/11: Kennel Presentation: At the front of the crate with soft eyes, ears to the side and mid tail. Leash Skills: Easy to leash and came right out of kennel. Hesitated to walk through the kennels, started to pull back towards crate. Went through surgery hallway to go outside which is quieter. Moderately pulled on leash. Hesitant through doorways. Ears to the side, wide/soft eyes and mid tail slowly moving. Sociability: Tolerant of handling with body language the same as above. Snatchy with treats and jumping on me. Dog Interaction: In playgroup. Stiff at the gate went into the yard and immediately jumped on Leela's back who did not react began to growl. Steered off and when moving away began air snapping towards Leela. Return to Kennel: Went into crate and I removed leash with hand. Color Level: Exp Gold Per volunteer 9/10: Medium energy. Allowed handling. Snatchy with treats. Was sniffing around floor when took her out of kennel. Per volunteer 9/9: Medium energy. Allowed all handling but is very anxious. Snatchy with treats. Has happy tail and bite wounds. Per staff 9/9: Medium energy. Per volunteer 9/8: Medium energy. Mildly shy. Sweet. Likes treats. Put her head on my lap. Cute teefers! Just a great dog who needs a bath. Per staff 9/7: Very sweet! Tolerated all handling and exam. Solicited pets and attention from everyone in the room despite being in pain. Per finder 9/7: Great on leash. Friendly. -- Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
