Toffee

Toffee is an adoptable male Norfolk Terrier looking for a home at NYC ACC-Queens in Ridgewood, New York. He is senior and small in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list and today is the last day, listed due to behavior. Adopting Toffee, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

Toffee has not acclimated to the shelter environment due to best efforts to keep him comfortable. While in care, Toffee l has displayed fearful defensive behaviors including discomfort with handling including avoiding touch and interactions. He has snapped at a handler when they were attempting to remove him from kennel and bit a handler's hand when they were leashing (no broken skin). Toffee has shown social behavior with familiar handlers, accepting petting and leaning into contact. Medically, Toffee is diagnosed with dental disease and is overweight. Toffee was surrendered into care as a stray, so his past behavior in a home environment is unknown. Toffee has not acclimated well to the shelter environment, only allowing for minimal handling. During his intake, he was stiff-bodied but tolerated the intake tasks. Toffee remains fearful and avoidant of interaction and handling and has escalated to snapping at handlers. Due to these concerns, we recommend placement in an adult-only home through a New Hope Rescue partner that is able to give him the time and space to decompress and acclimate at his own pace.
