About Sophie

Sophie is an adoptable female Poodle looking for a home at Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control in West Palm Beach, Florida. She is a young adult and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to other. Adopting Sophie, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Intake Info: Sophie's owner brought her in for euthanasia service due to she can no longer trust this dog. She stated it has bitten her multiple times over the last 3 years. This last bite that occurred on 9.6.26 was unprovoked as were the others. She stated Sophie got stuck behind a box and when she stepped forward to aid the dog, it bit her on the left foot. She arrived here on 9/15 and was adopted on 10/05. Sadly, she was returned with the adopter stating Sophie's energy is a little too much for their home. They said Sophie takes a little while to wake up in the morning and isn't ready to eat first thing. Takes treats gently, sleeps all night, enjoys being groomed, likes playing with toys/balls, she's good on leash, likes to be close to her people and getting pets/scratches, she knows some hand signals, she will whine when she needs to go outside to potty, and will give a nose bump. she got along with a med/large doodle neighbor dog and does not door dash. The behavior concerns mentioned is that she is startled easy and has lunged/snapped at the males in the home. Medical: A little fidgety and nervous but sweet girl. Deaf. Otherwise apparently healthy canine. HS-3. Vaccinated and heartworm negative. Behaviors Observed: Sophie was friendly and treat-motivated, approaching handlers for treats and attention. She tolerated full-body petting and firmer pats without issue, though she showed mild sensitivity when patted on her lower underbelly. She enjoyed sniffing and exploring on a walk and allowed her head halter to be removed without issue. Behaviors reported in her original home could not be replicated. She is steerable with a spray bottle, socializes well with other dogs, and seeks attention from handlers. Request to Rescues: Sophie has a bite history with her original owner where she seemed to have bitten when spooked or snuck up on. The recent adopter had to return the dog due to behavior in the home that seemed similar. It was fine with her, but not with family members. Deaf dogs can be easily spooked as they may not hear people or animals approaching them, this can result in behavioral issues. This dog needs a rescue who can find it an owner experienced with deaf dogs who can approach its special needs with care.
