EVALUATION DATE: 2026-10-22 SMALL DOG SOCIAL \"OVERALL SCORE\": NEEDS ASSESSMENT i TRAINING RECOMMENDATION: B-MOD HANDLING i EVALUATION COMMENTS: The behaviors described today reflect the dog's responses in an Animal Care Center environment and during assessment. A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences. He was standing in the middle of his kennel with a tense body, concerned eyes and growling softly as the handler approached. He was allowed to retreat to the outside section of his kennel as the separation panel was raised. The handler approached him from the outside gate. Brendan resumed growling with wide eyes and a low head. As the gate was opened, Brendan retreated to the back wall. He avoided eye contact while slowly pacing the back wall. As soon as the handler stepped in, he focused on the handler's face and began growling. As the loop leash was placed in front of him, he snarled while growling. As the handler reached out to place the loop leash over his head, Brendan jumped up with an open mouth and bit the loop leash, briefly holding. The handler reset and tried to coax and build trust with him. Brendan did not relax and remained focused. The handler tried placing the loop leash over his head several times, but each time Brendan would jump up and bite the leash with focused eyes and hackles raised. Brendan would not calm nor stop being defensive in kennel. The handler backed out of the kennel and closed the gate for safety and to avoid causing any further stress. Due to his defensive behavior and being unable to remove him safely, he is designated as RESCUE ONLY
