Evaluation Comments (Observations from our staff and volunteers) 10/29/2026 Familiar handler approached kennel, crouched, spoke softly and called dog by name. Dog approached gate, sniffed hand, then began growling, lip curling. 10/29/2026 Dog was lying at front of kennel when approached; startled at sight of handler and stood up; alarm barked and jumped onto kennel gate; low growl. Handler crouched low and spoke softly; offered treats; dog quickly settled and ate treats; took treats from hand; remained tense postured. Spent a few minutes scattering treats and offering treats by hand before offering leash to smell; opened kennel door and placed leash inside; when grazing neck dog would startle back; full pilo raising along spine; low growled; turned and walked to opposite side of kennel; repeated a couple times until handler closed divider; scattered more treats and tried again; this time dog did not react to leash besides ducking head away when touched; allowed leash placement. Dog walked at a slow pace; non reactive to barking dogs but visibly startled; tail tucked; walking quickly down hallway; once outside dog would take time sniffing along walk; entered yard; spent yard outing sniffing independently; tried scattering some treats but not interested; handler extended leash and allowed dog to explore on her own; would speak softly; dog would not acknowledge or approach. Handler would stand to pick up waste and fix leash when stuck on pole; dog would startle and look up at handler; settled; grazed leash along hind end and had no reaction. When time to go handler attached clip cleash as dog was air scenting and distracted at fence; walked at a slow pace back to kennel; hesitant to enter doorways; entered kennel on own with no coaxing needed; removed leash with clip leash. 10/26/2026 At front of kennel with flagged tail wag, began low growling and alarm barking as handler baby talked, no interest in treats or coaxing, pacing between divider, closed divider. Continued to alarm bark as leash was presented, wary of leash placement, flinches heavily when touched by leash and retreats quickly, will attempt to dash out of kennel when adjusting leash, able to place large loop over dogs head as dog attempting to dash out of kennel. Walked with easy leash pull, sniffed dogs in passing with neutral body, flinches heavily with stiff body when bumping into handler on way to \"J\" yard, zig zag walking pattern. In yard dog became stiff bodied, head flipped when brushing end of leash on back, distant and avoidant of handler all of evaluation, easily startled and flinches heavily for loud noises, would not come to handler all of evaluation, no interest in treats offered or by calling on name, paced slowly around yard, went potty. Became stiff bodied and hard stared whenever approached, will slowly start to walk away from handler with some flagged tail, never allowed handler to get close until retrieving leash, head flipped with stiff body when placing clip leash. No issues on return, walked into kennel on own, used clip leash for leash retrieval. 10/26/2026 On approach k9 barked at handler, handler spoke sweetly to k9, called \"Peaches\" k9 immediately softened and started wagging tail, easy leash placement. Walked well outside for potty break, urinated once. K9 bumped into chain link fence (visually impaired see exam notes) but otherwise had no issues while on walk. Brought to clinic, k9 allowed skin scrape with no restraint. Allowed petting on back and head, under chin. Easy return to kennel, leash removed by hand. 10/25/2026 Low growling on approach, intermittent alarm barking. Handler crouched down, called dog by name, spoke softly. Dog stopped growling but remained stiff, cheeks puffing. Dog slowly came forward, accepted treats through gate. Handler opened gate, attempted to drape leash, dog whipped head back, lip curling. Repeated this a few times, very wary of leash. Handler pulled away, continued to kennel-flirt, gave more treats. Dog paced briefly, then came forward when gate was opened. Handler was able to place leash with more ease- dog flinched but tolerated it. Once leashed, dog turned away, frozen, wouldn't move. Handler applied light leash pressure, dog turned and exited. Walked slowly, needing direction due to vision impairment. Tense when passing reactive dogs. Walked to main yard without issue, frequent stop and go to sniff. Handler was able to adjust stopper, drop leash. Dog explored yard slowly, nose down. Bumped into objects and became startled. Handler sat on bench, gave dog time and space. Handler occasionally called out, dog did not react. Dog relieved self. Dog wandered closer to handler, looked up and stared, stiff body, broke focus and continued on. Dog displayed no affiliative body language, no indication of being interested in attention from handler. After a while, handler slowly followed dog, able to retrieve leash. Dog was easily startled by handler's movements or noises, would jump back and stare. Handler walked dog to gate, exited. Slow walk back to kennel but no issues, able to direct dog past staff in area. Entered kennel with light leash direction. Leash removed via clip lead as precaution. 10/24/2026 at front of kennel, tense body, tail flagged, alarm barking. requesting full eval based on kennel presentation. 10/23/2026 Easy leashing, walking into Triage.
