Mae

Mae is an adoptable female Pit Bull Terrier looking for a home at Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control in West Palm Beach, Florida. She is fully grown and large in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to other. Adopting Mae, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Intake Info: Mae (A2329971) was found lying on the sidewalk in West Palm Beach and has been at our shelter since March 2026. Medical: Mae is estimated to be 7 years old. She is fully processed and heartworm negative. When she first arrived, she was noted to have thickened ear canals and may have underlying allergies or be prone to recurrent ear infections. Recent X-rays showed hip dysplasia, as well as degenerative joint disease affecting both knees and, to a lesser extent, the hips. There is also concern for a possible left cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) rupture, with possible patellar luxation. These findings appear chronic and degenerative but can be managed. Staff Notes: Mae did well for processing. Her ears were cleaned. Volunteer Notes: Mae is very food motivated and knows sit. She will sit before doors or gates are opened and is learning down and place quickly. She is also learning to drop it during drive-expression activities. She did not bite the leash. Mae can become excited when entering her kennel but responds well to structure and reinforcement. Behavior Notes: Mae has participated in playgroups with several dogs and has demonstrated social behavior, engaging in push/pull and rough-and-rowdy play. She has played appropriately with multiple dogs and has given corrections when another dog mounted her. Mae can become overstimulated during play, but staff were able to use tools to slow her down before she returned to play. Mae may display toy/resource guarding tendencies, particularly with squeaky toys. During an assessment, she initially ran away when approached while holding a toy and vocalized when her leash was handled. However, when treats were offered, she readily dropped the toy or allowed it to be taken. Mae is very toy-motivated, and the Canine Enrichment Team will be consulted to help address these behaviors. Request to Rescues: Mae is in urgent need of rescue as she needs a follow-up with a private veterinary care for her orthopedic concerns and may benefit from joint supplements, pain management, controlled exercise, and potentially further evaluation for CCL repair. She may also need future veterinary care for recurrent ear infections or possible underlying allergies. Mae is a great dog who has spent far too long in the shelter. She deserves the chance to finally be loved in a comfortable home where someone can give her the one-on-one attention she needs and stay on top of her medical care.
