A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Kimchi was at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, soft eyes, and a neutral tail. He retreated to the back of the kennel when the runner presented the leash. His body was slightly tense as he huddled against the wall with his kennel mate. The handler entered the yard, and gently tossed the leash over his head. He required gentle pressure on the leash to exit the kennel, but would not walk once out of the kennel. A second handler arrived with the rolling cart, and Kimchi was placed inside the cart and rolled to the yard. He was easy to collar while allowing the handler to pet him. In the catch pen, his body was slightly tense, his tail was tucked, and he would not approach the fence to greet the other dogs. He was walked into the yard, where he timidly greeted the other dogs. He roamed the yard for a few minutes, but became very frightened when the shake can was used to break up a minor altercation between other dogs. He ran to the corner of the yard, where he sat with a tense body, wide eyes, and a tucked tail. He perked up a bit when his kennel mate entered the yard, and then stayed by his side for the remainder of playgroup. As other dogs were returned to the kennels after playgroup, Kimchi began sniffing and gently playing with a clam female but never strayed far from his kennel mate. Kimchi is tolerant of the other dogs, has a low energy level, and prefers a gentle-dainty playstyle.
