Scooby

Scooby is an adoptable male Pit Bull Terrier looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is fully grown and medium in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Scooby, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

Scooby ACCT-A-259539 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Scooby must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST at 10AM. Should Scooby's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Scooby came to ACCT Philly as a stray on August 24th after he was found in a lot with a crate he had broken out of. He has shown himself to be a sweet, bright, food-motivated young dog who is eager to get outside and enjoy some attention. He is medium energy overall and has been described as good on walks, though he can pull strongly or become excited and jumpy, especially when treats are involved. Scooby enjoys exploring, sniffing around the yard, chasing a ball, and leaning in for pets once he settles. He can be selective about his dog friends, having had both good and bad dog meets at the shelter. Scooby's enthusiasm and food motivation give him a great foundation for learning, and he would benefit from a home ready to provide structure, positive reinforcement, and plenty of opportunities for activity and adventure. Due to his length of stay, Scooby is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. Sweet. Per volunteer 9/13: Medium energy. Very excited to be leashed. Mild issues on leash. Slightly jumpy. Seemed to be able to entertain himself in the yard. Per staff 9/11: Attempted to bring into playgroup. Pulled hard towards the fence with tense body, hard eyes, ears to the side and mid tail stiffly wagging. He was muzzle punching when Westbrook came up. Tried a leash meet, both dogs pulled hard towards each other and as they went face to face Scooby air snapped towards him. Per staff 9/6: Medium energy. Jumpy. Good on walk. Per staff 9/5: High energy. Do not want to return to kennel. Good boy. Per volunteer 8/31: Scooby is back in ISO, and was sitting on his bed, patiently waiting for his turn to get outside. Once leash, he showed me his enthusiasm with a little bit of jumping, and became more excited when he found my treat pouch. We quickly walked outside. He does some pulling, but it was nothing excessive. He had a healthy pee once he got onto the grass indicating he is trying to stay house trained. He gave an appropriate fence greeting to the female dog, Latte, that was in the other yard - some sniffs and a playbow. He was immediately excited knowing that I had treats; he seems to be very food motivated, not uncommon since he is thin boy. As soon as he saw food, he would start jumping. I found that tossing them so he had to find the treats, was initially the best way for me to give them to him. He doesn't seem to know the sit cue, and he has no patience waiting for treats, so I had to be fast. I tried to entice him to play fetch, but that didn't last long. He brought the ball back once, but mainly he just chased it. He was very nosy watching the other dog leaving their yard and whatever activity was going on outside our yard. Finally, he slowed down, and came to me so I could give him pets. When we went inside, he took that opportunity to scout for food. He wasn't difficult to return to his kennel, though he would prefer to stay out of it, but since food is the way to his heart, it was also the way to get him inside his kennel. Scooby is a beautiful boy, with a little jumping that will need to be curbed, but very food motivated so learning new behaviors will be easier for him when treats are involved. He seems the type of dog whose ready for many adventures. Per staff, playgroup 8/27: Steer Test: 0/5 both water and can. Note, not captured on camera due to technical difficulties. Tolerant of Finnegan Flan being pushy, high tail, ears back, vocalized and moved away. Was removed from the yard due to coughing. Per staff 8/26: Kennel Presentation: On the backside of his kennel when I approached. Came to the front with a loose wiggly body, ears back, soft eyes, mid level tail wags. Took a treat through the bars then jumped up on the door. Leash Skills: Tossed treats back to move him from the door, when he returned to the front was wiggly and pawing at the door, able to leash with a treat lure. Once leased came right out, pulls strongly on leash. Sociability: In the yard, sniffed around loose body, ears back. Came over when I called to him and jumped on me with the same loose body language. Allowed all handling with a loose body, loose mid to low tail, ears back. Went back to sniffing around then came back over and would continuously jump up on me with the same body language, tossed treats which he went for then returned to jumping up and mouthing at my treat pouch. Short arm'd the leash and he tried to jump up a few more times before stopping. Dog Interaction: Mer Pocono, forward greetings, loose body, would turn around when she tried to sniff then move away. Return to Kennel: Walked back pulling strongly, ears back, tail low, stopped outside his kennel for a second then hopped in. Leash was clipped and was removed easily. Color Level: Exp Blue Recommendations and considerations: Children 13+ Per staff 8/26: Medium energy. Good boy. Per staff 8/25: High energy. Mild issues walking through kennels. Moderate issues on leash. Significant issues returning to kennel. Per staff 8/25: Very bright and high energy. Jumpy, slightly mouthy, and strong - pulls hard on leash. Does not appear to know any commands. Tolerated all handling and exam but very wiggly Per staff 8/24: Very sweet and easy to handle, walks on a leash.
