Mimi

Mimi is an adoptable female American Staffordshire Terrier looking for a home at Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control in West Palm Beach, Florida. She is a young adult and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to other. Adopting Mimi, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Intake Info: Mimi A2343612 was found in a school yard. Due to her fearful behavior, the officer safely contained her using a humane capture pole. Mimi was scared, as she growled and barked at the officer, but she relaxed once she was unloaded from the vehicle. Medical: Mimi appears to be approximately 5 years old and has not yet been fully processed due to her behavior. She was observed limping on her right rear leg and is currently receiving FAS treatment. Staff Notes: Mimi's previous owner acknowledged that she has behavioral needs and may be likely to bite if someone approaches her before she has had time to become comfortable with them. In the shelter, Mimi has been observed running away with her tail tucked and showing whale eye when approached. She also lunged at the kennel door once the guillotine door was closed. When shown the leash, she displayed her teeth and a stiff body. Behavior Notes: Mimi initially ran to the opposite side of her kennel whenever the latch was touched. After being given access to the larger side of her kennel, she stood with her nose pressed against the door as it was opened. Staff were able to loop-leash her and take her for a walk. During the walk, Mimi would move away when there was slack in the leash but stopped when the leash tightened. Staff were able to sit with her at the benches and gently pet her head and back, which she tolerated. She also allowed additional handling from another staff member, including moderate pressure to her head, back, and rear. Mimi would benefit from continued positive dog-to-person interactions and slow, gentle introductions as she builds confidence with people. Request to Rescues: Beautiful Mimi is having a difficult time adjusting to the shelter environment and would benefit from a rescue that can provide the time, patience, and behavior support and careful introductions. She also has an ongoing medical concern with her right rear leg that will need follow-up with a private veterinarian.
