Carlito

Carlito is an adoptable male Pit Bull Terrier looking for a home at NYC ACC-Queens in Ridgewood, New York. He is fully grown and large in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list and today is the last day, listed due to behavior. Adopting Carlito, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

In the care center, Carlito has shown significant kennel stress, including barking, jumping at the kennel door, launching off the kennel walls, and difficulty settling. He has also displayed leash biting when being returned to his kennel, but is able to be distracted at times.. Carlito has shown improvement with familiar handlers, engaging well with treats and pattern games, and allowing petting but is still struggling in the care center. Medically, Carlito is apparently healthy. Carlito was surrendered into care as a stray, so his past behavior in a home environment is unknown. Carlito has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. He has trembled with a tense body, whale-eyed handlers, and has moved to the back of his kennel when a handler approaches. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
