Ever

A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Ever was on the outside of the kennel, but moved to the inside when the handler called him. His body was slightly tense, his eyes were wide and concerned, and his tail was tucked. He was avoidant of the leash, but the handler was able to gently toss the leash over his head. He walked nicely on leash, and was wary of being collared. However, he allowed the handler to collar him when she moved slowly. In the catch pen, his body was slightly tense, his eyes were wide, and his tail was low. He entered the yard, and anxiously bypassed the other dogs without greeting them. He roamed the yard for several minutes before he approached the handler and leaned against her legs, allowing the handler to pet him. He began to roam the yard again, staying close to the other dogs. However, he would quickly move away if any of the dogs tried to greet him. He found a calm dog, and laid near her by the pool. He did not engage in play with the other dogs, but was able to coexist in a group of calm dogs. Ever is tolerant of the other dogs, has a medium energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Ever was already in the yard when the handler decided to begin the handling assessment. He was moved to the side yard, and given a few moments to decompress before the handler entered the yard. He roamed the yard for several minutes while ignoring the handler, but eventually approached when the handler called him. He leaned against the handler's legs, and allowed the handler to pet his head, neck, and back with no issues. The handler was able to check his ears and teeth. When the handler touched his abdomen, his body tensed and he tried to lie down. He laid down anytime the handler tried to touch his tail or paws, and would quickly turn to face the handler whenever she did touch his paws. He did not growl or try to bite, but was clearly very uncomfortable with being handled. He side-eyed the handler with wide eyes, and tried to move away from her. When the assessment was over, he moved away while the handler prepared to take him back to the kennel. When the handler leashed him again, he stood next to her and allowed her to pet his head, neck, and back again. He was easily returned to the kennel with no issues.
