Tonya

Tonya is an adoptable female Staffordshire Bull Terrier looking for a home at BARC Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas. She is fully grown and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list and today is the last day, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Tonya, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Located At: BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions Description: My name is Tonya. I am a female, tan and white Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix. Age: The shelter staff think I am about 3 years old. More Info: I have been at the shelter since Sep 22, 2026. I am in kennel DC24. Tonya and Tina came into BARC together. Both girls are extremely frightened in the shelter. 🐾 Meet Tonya ID #A2096989 3 years old ' Female ' Staffordshire Mix ' Tan/White Weight: 34.8 lbs intake date: 9/22/26 🐾 Meet Tina ID #A2096992 2 years old ' Female ' Staffordshire Mix ' Black Weight: 28.6 lbs intake date: 9/22/26 ⸻ 🩺 MEDICAL NOTES: Both Tonya and Tina tested HIGH POSITIVE for heartworms and will need heartworm treatment. Both dogs required tranquilization during their field intake/initial handling. Tonya was darted in the right shoulder and tranquilized in the left rear leg. Tina required multiple tranquilizer attempts/injections during intake. Both received vaccinations, deworming and preventatives. ⸻ 🐾BEHAVIOR NOTES: These two girls appear terrified and shut down, not comfortable in the shelter environment. Tonya has been lying at the back of her kennel with a tense body and whale eyes, at times facing the wall. When leashed she has thrashed from fear and has needed to be carried between kennels. On 9/24, staff were able to carry her without a muzzle. Tina has similarly remained at the back of her kennel with a tense body. On 9/24, she was so shut down that she wouldn't lift her head from the floor when staff attempted to leash her, so they chose to leave her alone rather than cause additional stress. These girls need patience, gentle handling and somewhere quiet where they can begin to decompress.
