Arturo

Arturo is an adoptable male Bullmastiff looking for a home at Los Angeles County - Downey in Downey, California. He is fully grown and medium in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 3 days left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Arturo, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Arturo was at the rear of the kennel with a tense/timid demeanor and was wary of the handler/did not approach. Using a slow approach and gentle coaxing the handler was able to leash/remove Arturo from the kennel. He was taken to the catch pen and was collared/leashed using a slow approach. He appeared uncomfortable but was tolerant of the process. He greeted the dogs at the barrier with a neutral demeanor and was guided into the play yard. Arturo displayed a slightly tense body, low tail, ears back, closed mouth, and soft eyes. Arturo appeared overwhelmed by the dogs that came to greet him and he moved away. He started to paw/jump at the fencing appearing to try and escape the play yard. The play yard was adjusted with Arturo and a group of calm gentle/dainty dogs separated into a yard. He approached the handler for petting, but when the handler reached out to pet him Arturo pulled away. He approached the handler a few more times before fully allowing himself to be pet. He leaned into the handlers' legs and continued to seek further engagement, eventually allowing belly rubs. Arturo appeared much more at ease in the play yard and opened up further socializing with the other calm dogs. He briefly participated in play chase and continued to explore and socialize with the other dogs nicely. At times when playful dogs in the adjacent yard became too 'rowdy' Arturo would bark at them through the barrier. He appeared to 'hall monitor' their play and was easy to steer with verbal corrections. Arturo maintained a relaxed and social demeanor displaying no play style at this time but appeared to prefer calm gentle/dainty dogs. Arturo could benefit from a slow and patient introduction with further socialization and confidence building. See additional assessment for placement recommendations. Arturo displayed a loose wiggly, body, open mouth pant, natural ear set, loose tail wag, and soft eyes. Arturo approached the handler seeking engagement from them and briefly flinched when he received petting. Arturo then fully leaned into the handler's touch soliciting further petting. Arturo allowed the handler to examine his ears, mouth, abdomen, back, lower extremities, and tail with ease. Arturo continued to seek engagement exposing his belly for belly rubs. Arturo maintained a loose wiggly/demeanor throughout the assessment and was returned to his kennel without incident. Arturo is ok for public adoption medium energy level large dogs ok.
