Petunia
Mastiff
Urgent: 3 Days Left
Scheduled: October 7, 2026
Reason: Lack of Space
Petunia is an adoptable female Mastiff looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is fully grown and large in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 3 days left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Petunia, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.
Petunia ACCT-A-260939 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Petunia must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or EXPERIENCED ADOPTER by WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7TH at 10AM. Should Petunia's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Petunia is a 5-year-old Mastiff who came to ACCT Philly as a stray on September 6th. She was very fearful when she first arrived, but she has made great progress and is now showing us her sweet, wiggly personality. Petunia loves attention, leans into pets, and is very food motivated. Volunteers have consistently described her as sweet, friendly, and easy to love. Petunia has enjoyed meeting other dogs and has had several positive interactions in playgroup. She is generally low to medium energy and walks well on leash, though she can get playful and mouthy with the leash when excited. Due to her length of stay, Petunia is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or experienced adopter. VIDEOS: Playgroup 9/8: Playgroup 9/9: Petunia knows sit! Per staff 9/20: At the front of her kennel loose wiggly body, mid level nub wags, soft eyes. Ate the treat I tossed in. Easy to leash and came out right away. Pulled mild to moderately on leash, loose body, ears back, low nub. In the yard she turned around with a loose wiggly body and started to jump on me, took a step back and she started to jump up and leash bite. Tossed treats which she stopped to eat then started jumping up and leash biting again. With tossing treats and moving she stopped. Allowed all handling with a loose body, leaning into me. Takes treats snatchy so tossing them is best. When I stopped petting her she started to jump up again, I started moving and she followed no longer jumping. When leaving the yard she started to leash bite again, I continued to toss treats again and she stopped. No further leash biting on the way back inside. She walked right into her kennel and leash was removed easily by hand. Per staff, playgroup 9/10: Steerable 3-4/5 with water. Good greetings, loose wiggly body, play bows, jumped on the other dogs. Mingled around after playing. Per staff, playgroup 9/9: Steer test 4/5 with water and 3/5 with can. Nub wagging. Play bow, attempted to mount. Moved away. Low tail wags, looser body, head low, ears back at the fence. Slow entry to the yard, avoidant, with time greeted Beanie, quick moves, ears back, wider eyes, hackles raised, moved away on own, tolerant of other dogs greeting her. Per staff 9/8: Kennel Presentation: Laying on her bed when I approached, ears back, wide eyes, furrowed brow, started to low growl. I tossed in a treat and she sniffed at it from a distance. I tossed another treat closer and she ate it then got up and slowly came to the front and ate the other treat, wide eyes, ears back, furrowed brow, tail low. Leash Skills: Dodged the leash at first, with a treat lure able to leash. Once leashed came out and walked pulling mildly with hackles raised, furrowed brow, ears back, wide eyes, mid to high stiff tail. Outside went to the bathroom right away and was frequently stopping to sniff. Sociability: In the yard was sniffing around, nose to the ground, ears back, tail low, hackles raised. Would not come over when called and kneeled down at first only came over for treats. Took them a little snatchy so open palm or tossing them is best, she can catch! Slightly tense with handling, ears back, head low, wide eyes, hackles raised, moved away. After about a minute or two of sniffing around came over when I kneeled down with softer eyes, ears back, looser body. Allowed handling with low to mid tail wags and the same body language, and would nudge my hand when I stopped petting her. Would flinch and move away with fast movements and over the head. Dog Interaction: Saw a dog walk past the fence, stopped sniffing to look up, ears to the side, mid level tail, then returned to sniffing. The dog barked at her and she walked over to the fence, hackles raised, ears back, barked, easy to move along with calling to her and light leash pressure. Return to Kennel: Walked back pulling moderately with the same body language as walking out. Hopped right into kennel and was able to remove leash by hand when reaching from the side. Color Level: Blue Per staff 9/8: On the backside of her kennel for cleaning, standing at the front bars with wide eyes, ears back, furrowed brow. Started to give some slow low nub wags when I talked to her. Tossed in a treat which she went over and ate, returned back to the front with some low tail wags and softer wide eyes. Per staff 9/6: Timid, very fearful, hard barking, non aggressive behavior, shaking, very vigilant, allowed leashing and transfer into truck.
