Kelce
Mastiff
Urgent: 1 Day Left
Scheduled: October 5, 2026
Reason: Behavior
Kelce is an adoptable female Mastiff looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is fully grown and large in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to behavior. Adopting Kelce, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.
Kelce ACCT-A-260968 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to behavioral concerns. Kelce must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER by MONDAY, OCTOBER 5TH at 10AM. Should Kelce's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Kelce is a 4-year-old Great Dane/Cane Corso mix who came to ACCT Philly as an owner surrender on September 16th. Her previous family described her as loyal and playful, but also very protective and fearful of people she doesn't know. They reported that she can bark, growl, and nip when meeting new people, though she typically settles once she has time to get comfortable. Since arriving at ACCT, Kelce has often been overwhelmed in the shelter environment and benefits from a slow, soft approach. Once outside her kennel, she is generally low energy and easy to walk, and she has shown that she can be sweet and curious with people when given time and space. She knows \"sit,\" takes treats gently, and has been tolerant and avoidant during dog introductions. Due to her behavioral concerns, Kelce is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner'who can give her the time, structure, and behavioral support needed to build trust in a home environment. Per volunteer 9/20: Was sitting in kennel. Divider was down so pretty tight space for large dog. Came to kennel door when I opened it. Pulled on leash to leave the shelter, but once outside was much less pulling on the leash. Outdoors Kelce sniffed and eventually came over to me when I got lower to the ground. Came over to me for treats and the tail untucked. Walked around aloof. Knows \"sit\". Is a curious dog, sweetie, likes a slow and soft approach. Was a little overwhelmed at photoshoot with all the attention and pulled towards the door but took treats and redirected. Easily returned to kennel. Per staff 9/19: Laying on the bed. I approached and opened the gate. She tensed her body, furrowed brow. I tossed in a treat, she stood up and ate it. I put another on the ground in the leash and she stretched forward and was easily leashed while eating the treat. Tightly tucked tail while walking. Went to playgroup. When removing from the yard she was bucking at the leash, resisting being moved. She was allowed to retreat and we tried again and was successful at seamless removal from the yard. Pulled hard on the leash and outside pulled even harder towards the parking lot. Sociability: Brought into the yard and she was just looking out to the road. Some sniffing and went to the bathroom. I was able to do a few pets, skin crawling and moving away. Dog Interaction: Met Limber. Avoidant, tolerant of being sniffed and moving away. Return to Kennel: Went right into kennel and removed leash with clip. Color Level: Exp Blue Per staff 9/17: Curled up laying on the bed. Tense eyes, furrowed brow, ears to the side. She didn't try to but she just backed up and sit down when I tried to give her her vaccine. Per owner surrender notes 9/16: Reason for surrender: She is very protective but once she gets to know you she could be a really good dog she just needs people to put in the time unfortunately our family is growing and don't have the time anymore. Lives with young adults 18-25, kids 4-9 years old, older adults 60+. Fully housetrained and crate trained. Super high energy and an extremely strong puller. Favorite treats are deer antlers and any kind of bone. Sleeps in a dog bed/blanket on the floor. Knows name, sit, no, go potty. Enjoys rope toys, squeaky toys, bones or other durable chew toys, stuffed toys, and Kongs. Favorite activities include playing fetch, playing tug-of-war, running/jogging, napping, and hanging out with owners. Behavioral issues include too much energy/gets overstimulated, gets into the trash can, pulls too hard on leash, mouthing or play biting, fearful of new people, reactive/aggressive towards other dogs, cats, strangers, and children. Has tried to bite but didn't make contact. She is very protective but after a few minutes and she gets to know the person she normally calms down. Reaction towards wildlife depends on the situation. Her perfect home would be a house with a big yard for running around and people that can spend time with her. The best thing about her is she is very loyal and playful. Per owner 9/6: Yes she barks and growls at people when first meeting them it takes a little while for her to warm up to new people.
