A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Kane was sitting at the back of the kennel with a neutral demeanor, but approached the front of the kennel when the runner called him. He returned to the back of the kennel when the runner presented the leash, so the runner closed the divider and walked to other side of the kennel. Kane met the runner at the front of the kennel with a neutral body, concerned eyes, and a low tail. He was easy to leash and remove from the kennel, but appeared to be fearful of the environment. He trailed behind the runner while walking, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, his body was tense, his eyes were wide and concerned, and his tail was low. He was muzzled prior to entering the yard due to his reported history of attacking another dog. He entered the yard, and exchanged tense greetings with the other dogs. He roamed the yard, keeping to himself as much as possible. He eventually moved away from the other dogs completely, and sat by himself in the shade. When one of the dogs approached to greet him, Kane's body tensed and he began to growl. He shifted his weight toward the other dog, his pupils dilated, and he continued to growl. The handler steered the other dog away, but Kane jumped up to follow him with a tense body and hard eyes. The handler was able to steer Kane with an audible correction from the shake can, and he slowly moved away from the other dog. When another dog tried to greet him, he displayed the same behavior. He was moved to the side yard to decompress on his own for a few moments before he was returned to his kennel. Kane is selective of the other dogs, has a low energy level, and does not have a playstyle at this time.
