Milo Bear

Milo Bear is an adoptable male American Staffordshire Terrier looking for a home at NYC ACC-Manhattan in New York, New York. He is fully grown and medium in size. While in care, Milo has been observed to be fearful and have a low threshold for arousal. Noted to jump up and bite the leash and fixate on it when handlers are attempting to leash him. Milo was also previously observed to mount handlers throughout their walk. Throughout his stay, Milo has displayed fearful behavior towards handlers, which has escalated to growling. He is also observed to balk while on leash and needs coaxing to continue. With familiar handlers, Milo will have a loose and wiggly body when they approach and will take treats exuberantly. Medically, Milo is healthy at this time. Since arriving at the care centers Milo Bear has displayed concerning behaviors and has not acclimated well to life in the shelter. He has difficulty with impulse control and will frantically jump on handlers and is difficult to redirect, this arousal also manifest in the form of leash biting. He has also displayed fearful behavior which has escalated to growling and baring teeth toward handlers. We recommend placement with a New Hope rescue partner who is able to provide an experienced, adult-only foster home. Force-free, reward based training and/or consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended. A volunteer writes: Excitable, playful, wiggly little meatball! This perfect-size wiggle machine was so happy and excited, bouncing around, play-bowing to me, and hopping onto the bench. As soon as treats came out, though, he immediately sat and showed off that he also knows "paw." He leaned in, butt up, asking staff for scratches. Such a funny, goofy, lovable boy-he's so much fun to be around!
