Pound Cake

Pound Cake is an adoptable male Bullmastiff looking for a home at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control - West in Phoenix, Arizona. He is a young adult and large in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 4 days left, listed due to behavior. Adopting Pound Cake, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

Memo 10/21/2026 10/21/26 15:01 Canine has shown consistent over-arousal and is difficult to manage safely while in care. Placement with a New Hope Partner is required by close of business 10/26/26 to allow for behavioral support and assessment in a different setting. May be at risk for euthanasia 10/27/26 or sooner if warranted. Evaluation Comments (Observations from our staff and volunteers) 10/18/2026 Dog was closed to back half of kennel, opened kennel divider & verbally coaxed to front half without issues. Presented leash, would jump up while biting @ leash. Offered treats, would settle with treats. Once leashed, would walk with a strong pull on leash while keeping tail flagged & hackles relaxed. Would pace along fence line in main PY while keeping tail flagged & panting heavy. Approached handler, jumping up & nipping @ handlers sleeves. Able to step to the side & direct dog off without issues while scattering treats. Handler sat on bench, dog would approach handler, leaning in for petting then return to exploring while having tail still flagged & panting heavy. Tossed toys, was not interested in toys. Dog would approach handler again, would lean into handlers legs while being pet on head, turned & started to air snap towards hands, not making contact. Handler picked up leash, dog would start to bite while pulling back on leash, handler dropped leash, dog would start to pace having mouth wide open & tongue hanging out. Handler called dog over to gate, dog would approach, able to quickly pick up leash & walked back to kennel. Dog would keep jumping up & biting @ leash, able to keep dog walking to kennel. Would start to pull back on leash once kennel gate was opened, able to fully step into kennel for dog to follow then step out. Removed leash by hand without issues. 10/17/2026 Closed outside for AM cleaning. Dog approached handler with soft body and wagging tail, took treats. Easy to leash, hard pull to yard but able to direct when needed, hackles raised and stiff wagging tail when walking past kenneled dogs, no attempts to interact. Affiliative with handler, wiggly body and wagging tail, front paws on lap soliciting attention, allowed petting all over, jumpy when offered treats but sat when given verbal cue, eagerly took from hand. Explored yard, nose to ground, tense with flagged tail when exploring near kenneled dogs on opposite side of fence, returned to handler when verbally coaxed, jumped on bench and lied down next to handler, body soft and wiggly, panting, tongue lolled, allowed more pets, stood on handler's lap and leaned into handler, attempted to lick face. Dog then jumped off bench, followed handler to gate, no issues walking back to kennel. Resisted entering kennel, pulled back and briefly flailed, handler tossed hot dogs in kennel, dog followed, returned to kennel door and allowed handler to remove leash by hand. 10/16/2026 Dog was closed outside for cleaning, standing at gate with soft face and wiggly body language. Accepted treats. Easy to leash. Exited with light pull, appeared interested in neighboring dogs and wagged tail while sniffing towards them. While passing other kennels, dog had raised hackles, appeared more cautious but continued with verbal coaxing. Dog occasionally pulled towards reactive dogs but was easy to redirect with light leash guidance. Dog walked with moderate pull, followed handler into main play yard. In yard, dog explored for a few moments, loose body language, relieved self, then came to handler when called. Dog approached with wiggly body language, a little mouthy on initial approach but settled when gently corrected. Allowed all petting, leaned in. Demonstrated \"sit\" for treats, took them gently. Dog drank from pool, followed handler around yard. Tried getting into handler's lap, able to be directed back down. After a few more minutes, dog returned to handler on bench, appeared excited, tried getting into lap again, became slightly mouthy towards arms and hands, more difficult to redirect this time. Handler took leash, straight-armed dog away, stood. Dog wagged tail, allowed petting. Moderate pull on return to kennel. Hackles raised, slight tense body while passing neighbors. Dog would not enter outside portion of kennel, began thrashing head, pulling away on leash. No interest in treats tossed inside. Handler walked dog away, was able to lead dog inside kennel wing while other dogs were closed out. Dog would not enter kennel, pulled back. Handler opened divider, led dog back towards kennel. Dog stood and looked outside for a moment, then stepped in. Handler closed gate, removed leash via clip lead. Dog watched handler with soft face, wagging tail. Accepted treats through gate. 10/15/2026 Requesting full evaluation due to activity note. 10/15/2026 Soft wiggly body sitting at front of kennel with tail wagging. Soliciting attentions with handler.
