A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out'or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Dakota was at the front of the kennel alert barking/whining appearing anxious. Dakota was leashed using a slow approach and was taken to the catch pen. Dakota was collared/leashed with ease, and she appeared more at ease soliciting petting during the process. Dakota greeted the dogs at the barrier with a neutral demeanor and was allowed into the play yard. Dakota displayed a neutral body, closed mouth, low tail, ears back, and soft eyes. Dakota appeared wary of the dogs and scurried away from the approaching dogs. After a few moments she appeared more at ease but maintained her distance from the other dogs. Dakota approached the handlers soliciting petting from them becoming loose/wiggly when receiving petting/attention. Dakota spent the majority of the play session amongst the handler's seeking engagement. After some time, Dakota began to socialize with some of the calmer dogs around the handlers. Dakota spent the remainder of the play session amongst the handlers and the other calm dogs. Dakota maintained a neutral demeanor displaying no play style and was able to co-exist in the play yard. Dakota could benefit from confidence building and further socialization. Dakota is ok for public adoption medium energy level calm dogs recommended.
