A dog's behavior in an Animal Care Center may differ significantly from how they behave in a home. Stress, confinement, and unfamiliar surroundings can cause dogs to act out or suppress behaviors that may emerge later. A dog's behavior may change based on surroundings, training, medical, socialization, and life experiences.' Birdie greeted the runner with neutral body, soft eyes, and a low wag. She sat down when the runner presented the leash. She was easy to leash and remove from the kennel, pulled strongly on leash while bypassing the other kennels, and was easy to collar. In the catch pen, her body was tense, her eyes were focused, and she growled and lunged at the other dogs. She was muzzled prior to entering the yard for the safety of the other dogs. She entered the yard while being loosely restrained on leash. She immediately growled, lunged, and snapped at the other dogs, and tried to fight with a high- energy female. She was easy to steer with an audible correction from the shake can. Once she was settled, she was moved to the side yard with a group of calm dogs where she quietly roamed the yard with a slightly tense body. She hovered over a fearful female, but was easy to steer with a verbal correction. She eventually laid by the pool while observing the other dogs. She briefly engaged in play with a calm male. The muzzle was removed, and she was allowed to freely interact with the other dogs. She kept her distance from most of the dogs, but continued to play with the same calm male. She was a bit pushy, but was easy to steer. She solicited petting from the handlers. Birdie is selective of the other dogs, has a low energy level, and prefers a gentle-dainty playstyle.
