Harley

Harley is an adoptable female American Staffordshire Terrier looking for a home at San Antonio Animal Care Services in San Antonio, Texas. She is a young adult and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list and today is the last day, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Harley, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

08/14/2026 Play Group: Dog is nervous upon first approach with a lowered head, wide eyes, pinned ears, and a tucked tail. She slowly approaches handler to take treats gently and is easy to leash utilizing a slip lead. She walks outside with a tucked tail and lifts her lip as a collar is being placed on her. She rushes into the yard to a far corner with a tucked tail to defecate. She stays in this far corner, watching the other dogs with a tense body, wide eyes, and tucked tail. She is stressed by pacing along the wall while panting with pinned ears and wide eyes. She is able to adjust slightly by greeting dogs that approach her with the same body language. She is seemingly conflicted by engaging in brief play with a select dog where she quickly discontinues this play by communicating for space with an agonistic pucker and tucked tail. She retreats from handlers when they walk near. When her leash is secured, she is easy to return to kennel. 08/15/2026 Small Group: Dog is nervous upon first approach with a lowered head, wide eyes, pinned ears, and a tucked tail. She slowly approaches handler and is easy to leash utilizing a slip lead. She walks outside with a tucked tail and pulls to the end of her leash away from handler and defecates. She rushes into the yard to a far corner with a tucked tail. She engages in gentle play and co-exists with male and female dogs where she moves back to the corner if the other dogs walk away. When handler approaches her, she lays down, her leash is secured and she is easy to return to kennel with selected co-house mate Racoon A802041. 08/17/2026 Attempted co-house match with Harley A821394 and Sabine A821490. Harley continued to be fearful avoiding the leash at first and was slip leashed and walked outside easily. Harley greeted Sabine with a tucked tail and tucked ears where she was able to adjust with a loose tail and tucked ears. She greeted her and then continually walked away from her and did not reciprocate Sabine's attempts to play. Dogs were returned to their separate kennels. 08/18/2026 Play Group Dog is nervous upon first approach with a lowered head and a tucked tail where she is laying down. She pulls away when attempting to collar her and quickly turns her muzzle. She is slip leashed instead and walks outside with a tucked tail and pulls. She rushes into the yard to a far corner with a tucked tail. She engages in gentle play and co-exists with male and female dogs where she moves back to the corner if the other dogs walk away. She gains more confidence and is able to explore the entire yard, approach other dogs herself, and approaches handlers to sniff them. She is not interested in affection from handlers and is easily startled by all movements/noises by retreating with tucked ears and a tucked tail. She is selected to co-house with Jack Barrel A821602 and they are returned to the same kennel where she circled around handlers multiple times and was nervous when pulling to the end of the leash where she continued to walk with verbal encouragement.
