Intake Info: This dog, who we named Jackson, is a 6-year-old male who was found resting in a residential yard, reportedly suffering from a side injury. During transport, he lunged and bit the finder on the arm; the finder believes this was a fear-based reaction driven by pain. The finder sustained a puncture wound to the left arm. Upon arrival, Customer Service was unable to locate a microchip or identify a visible wound on the dog. While in the van, he barked but also wagged his tail. He is currently on bite quarantine until 9/23, with his stray hold ending 9/18. Medical: Upon intake, Jackson exhibited signs of heat stress, labored breathing, and possible primary or secondary laryngeal paralysis. He responded well to immediate cooling measures (fan and ice), after which his open-mouth breathing subsided and he began eating. However, a follow-up assessment the next day revealed continued exaggerated, labored breathing. He is severely underweight and has mild bilateral ocular discharge. Radiographs under sedation reveal an intact mature male with degenerative changes in multiple limbs and a history of shoulder and hip pain. He tested positive for heartworms and multiple intestinal parasites; he tested negative for Parvo. He requires a supportive environment to accommodate his mobility issues, targeted exercise to reduce stiffness, and medication adjustments for the remainder of his quarantine. He has become increasingly affectionate and attention-seeking. He remains sensitive to heat, frequently choosing the cool kennel floor over bedding. No microchip found. HS-3. Request to Rescues: Jackson needs a rescue partner capable of maintaining him through the remainder of his quarantine period and providing comprehensive long-term care. Immediate needs include rabies vaccination, microchipping, and sterilization. Due to significant musculoskeletal issues, he requires a private veterinary consultation to establish a professional treatment plan involving medication, specialized diet, and physical therapy. He also requires heartworm treatment and ongoing care for a heavy intestinal parasite burden, with re-screening advised in two weeks.
