Hamwich is an adoptable male Bullmastiff looking for a home at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control - West in Phoenix, Arizona. He is fully grown and large in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 3 days left, listed due to behavior. Adopting Hamwich, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

Recommendations ONLY DOG FAMILY INTRODUCTION Memo 9/22/2026 09/22/26 15:03 This dog is experiencing significant stress and anxiety in the shelter, particularly while kenneled. These behaviors are often a response to the overwhelming sights, sounds, and confinement, along with the lack of choice or control over their environment. Although this dog continues to show appropriate behavior outside of the kennel with positive interactions with staff and volunteers,without intervention, well-being will continue to decline. Immediate placement is needed with an experienced adopter or New Hope Partner who can provide time and space to decompress in a calm, supportive home. Placement needed by close of business 9/27/26. May be at risk of euthanasia 9/28/26 or sooner if warranted. Ignored other dogs. Walked very well on the leash and walked with loose leash throughout walk. Very friendly with handler. Would not stop this behavior with verbal coaxing. 9/19/2026 Dog chewed tennis ball sized hole into side paneling of kennel, began pulling out inner insulation. Able to be distracted away from chewing, greeted group of handlers with soft face and body, allowed additional handler to leash and pull from kennel, walk to new location. 9/19/2026 Easy to leash and remove from kennel. Moderate pull to clinic. Calmly explored clinic and approached handler throughout soliciting attention with soft body and tail wagging. Very treat motivated. Easy to return to kennel and remove leash. 9/17/2026 Solicited attentions, Playful, Easy to pull from kennel, Easy to return to kennel, Takes treats nicely, Easy/Loose Leash, Calm, Ignored dogs when walking past kennels, Sit, Such a good boy! Very gentle and sweet on removal from kennel. Walked the trail nicely, with little stopping. Played in yard for 10 mins after walk. Allows petting all over body and tried to kiss. haha. Easy to return to kennel. 9/16/2026 Dog was soft and wiggly when handler approached. Took hot dog treat gently. Easy to leash and pull from kennel. Dog walked right alongside handler, stopping to sniff/ urinate along the way to new kennel building. Dog waited next to handler calmly when waiting for another handler with a dog to pass. Easy to return and unleash by hand. 9/10/2026 Out for Purple training. Soft, wiggly, affiliative. Easily leashed, came right out, ignored neighbors. Very loose, ambling gait, walked alongside handler, negligible pull when he moved ahead. In yard he explored briefly, relieved himself then spent the rest of the time soliciting attention from handlers. He allowed all, prompted additonal by gently pushing head against handlers or into hands. On return he went right back in, leash retrieved by hand w/ ease. 9/10/2026 Soft, wiggly, affiliative. Easy leash placement at front of kennel, exited with easy leash pull, marked a few times on walk to play yard, no interest in dogs in passing, maintained wagging tail and soft body throughout walk. In yard dog would accept pets when placing leash stopper, began exploring briefly to go potty then would return to handler with soft neutral body, wagging tail throughout, soliciting attentions with handler allowing petting all over. Solicited attentions with volunteer outside of yard, jumped onto fence with soft body accepting pets, returned to handler when called over. No interest in dogs being walked outside of yard, remained neutral bodied and wagging tail while not focusing on activities outside of yard. Came to handler when called over to exit, easy leash pull back to kennel, startled by reactive small dogs in passing with light flinching. Solicited attentions with staff member in passing, sat with wagging tail while leaning in for pets allowing petting all over. Easy return to kennel, walked into kennel on own and allowed handler to remove leash by hand. *Potential adopters should be counseled on slow dog-dog introdutions, which should only occur after proper decompression time. 8/19/2026 Dog was lying in kennel with a relaxed body posture, approached kennel gate with a fast & wiggly body. Offered treats then leashed without issues. Walked slowly to small PY while stopping with nose to ground while sniffing, having a flagged tail & panting heavy. Once in PY, dog would pace along fence line. Approached handler when called over for treats then would continue to pace along fence line while pushing muzzle against fence. Handler would call dog over & scatter treats onto ground to help settle dog. Dog would allow petting with a relaxed body. Picked up leash & walked back to kennel while having a flagged tail, panting heavy, stopping to sniff along the way.
