Cashmere is an adoptable male Shih Tzu looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is fully grown and small in size. Cashmere is an approximately one-year-old small dog who came to ACCT Philly on September 20th as an owner surrender after a bite incident involving a child. He had only been in the home for two days, so he has now experienced three different environments in less than a week. He started off tense, wide-eyed, and growly in the back of his kennel, but more recently he was loose, wiggly, and tolerant of pets during a brief interaction with staff. Cashmere is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner who can give him time to decompress and provide the structure and training needed to help him feel more comfortable in new environments and with handling. Because he is currently under rabies observation through September 29th, his rescue placement must be in Pennsylvania. He was very food motivated, had trouble finding treats on the ground and was grabby from my hand. Social and affectionate, extremely tolerant of being picked up and pet all over. Per staff 9/26: Cashmere's kennel needed to be cleaned so I had him on leash as the other staff member cleaned it. He was tolerant of pets on his back and took a treat very gently. He was loose and wiggly. After a few minutes he started to get jumpy then began humping my leg. No issues returning to kennel other than him trying to come right back out. He did not acknowledge the other dogs in the room despite them barking a lot. Due to being on quarantine, I did not attempt further handling such as touching his face or paws, which he was noted to be sensitive about. He has the cutest underbite! Per staff 9/21: At the back of his kennel, low growling with wide eyes and a tense body. Tossed in a treat, which he ate, then returned to low growling and trembling. Per owner surrender notes 9/20: Surrendered for biting 2 year old daughter. Does not like touch on face/ paws. Tried to get him vaccinated vet would not take him. Not housebroken. Partially crate trained. Daughter was playing, dog bit daughter come to me crying. Yesterday vet would not see. Favorite toy is a running mouse toy. Barks at strangers. Unsteady calm/aggressive towards children. Not good with cats or other dogs. Ideal home would have no kids unless he gets training. Per staff conversation with owner 9/20: Bite breaking skin on 2-year old child in the home last night, went to urgent care last night. Did not need stitches but did require care. She had also previously tried to take him to the vet, and he was too aggressive. The owner said he needed grooming badly when she got him, and she tried to do it herself and was also bit. -- Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
