About Dude

Dude is an adoptable male Pit Bull Terrier looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is a young adult and medium in size. He is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 3 days left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Dude, or even sharing his story, could save a life before it's too late.

Dude ACCT-A-260865 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Dude must have confirmed placement with a' RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by MONDAY, OCTOBER 5TH at 10AM. Should Dude's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. ' Dude, you have to meet this guy! Dude is a bouncy, goofy, 10-month-old pup who came to ACCT Philly as an owner surrender after just a few months with his family. His family loved him but weren't home enough to keep up with a strong, energetic puppy. According to his owner, Dude is housebroken, puppy pad trained, crate trained, and a very happy dog. At the shelter, he happily splashes in the pools, chases balls, and trades one ball for another without fuss. He walks nicely on leash, enjoys sniffing and exploring, and can entertain himself in the yard. He also knows sit! Like most puppies, Dude can get jumpy and mouthy when excited, but he redirects easily with treats, and volunteers have noticed his manners improving. He has been a regular in doggie playgroup, showing loose body language, play bows, good breaks, and appropriate corrections. His previous owner reported that he's been friendly with women and children, though he may bark when someone enters the home or yard, particularly delivery workers or unfamiliar men. Dude is looking for an active home that can provide regular exercise, training, and patience as he grows into adulthood. If you're looking for a fun, water-loving buddy, Dude may be your guy! Due to his length of stay, Dude is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. Per volunteer 9/26: High energy. Loves to chase toys. Will sit for treats. Playful boy! Per volunteer 9/24: Very good boy. Per volunteer 9/23: High energy. Good boy. Per volunteer 9/22: What a bouncy playful boy! He is such fun, entertains himself, pretty good taking treats, pulls in his excitement to get out the play yard. Distracts easily with treats. Per volunteer 9/21: Good boy. Per volunteer 9/18: Medium energy. Great boy. Per volunteer 9/16: High energy. Loves treats. Per staff 9/15: High energy. Per staff conversation with previous owner 9/20: Owner stated that Dude has never bitten anyone or anything like that, and he is always fine with women and children in his experience, but that Dude can be defensive/protective of his home and yard - usually this happens when a delivery person or another male person enters the yard, Dude will become reactive, bark, and run to the door. I asked how Dude would typically react if someone was walking towards them on the street; owner stated that Dude will usually be wagging his tail, and that he really only becomes reactive when Dude is inside the home and sees someone coming in the yard. Owner also noted that Dude is trained to use puppy pads, and that the main reason for surrender is that owner works 6 days a week and his wife is having a lot of difficulty physically managing Dude since he is very strong. Wife was concerned about her ability to safely walk him due to his strength, and owner isn't home enough to care for him, so they opted to surrender. Per volunteer 9/13: Dude is in a single kennel and hadn't been out today. He can be a little barky in his kennel, which is understandable. He lived in a home for several months, and suddenly he's spending his puppy time in a kennel in a shelter. He was very happy to see me, a little excited to be leashed, and he comes out fast and strong. Once in the yard, he was fine just wandering around smelling. I tossed him the ball a couple of times and he chased it, but never returned with it. He was very interested in the dog in the other yard, but not vocal about it. He might be a dog that would thrive with another dog in the home, and based on his playgroup sessions, it seems he's dog social. Surprisingly, his manners were good. He wasn't jumpy and he wasn't mouthy. He didn't pull as much walking back into the shelter. With regular exercise and outside time, this boy's going to make somebody a good dog. Per staff playgroup 9/11: First dog in the yard, instant play when June entered, loose body, taking good breaks. Towards the end of his time in the yard, Goku was trying to get him to play and he lip raised as he moved away. Per staff playgroup 9/11: Steer test 2-3/5 with water and 0/5 with can. Good gate greetings. Slight hackles raised. Quick bouncy moves. Play bows. Corrected Encino and kept away from him. Per staff playgroup 9/10: Steer test 3-4/5 with water and 3/5 with can. Good greetings, instant play bows, interested in sniffing Petunia's hind end, would follow her around. Mingling around. Per volunteer 9/9: Kennel Presentation: Soft eyes, loose body, and mid tail wags. Dude was a little shy about being leashed and dodged the leash a few times, but eventually allowed the leash to go over his head. Leash Skills: Dude walks well on leash. He is curious about his surroundings and likes to sniff around. Sociability: In the yard, Dude was very social. He had soft eyes, a loose body, and low/mid tail wags. At times, he would become mouthy and jumpy, but he could be redirected with treats. Dude loved the water and especially enjoyed going into the pools. Toys and Play: Dude was very social with toys. He loved playing ball and would readily switch out for another ball. Dog Interactions: No dog interactions were done. Returning to Kennel: Dude did try to quick-turn and escape back out of his kennel. He went back in with a treat. Recommendations and Considerations: Dude is very puppy-like. He can be a bit mouthy and jumpy, so he is being placed as Blue for now. With improvements in his mouthiness and jumpiness, his color can be lowered. Color Level: Blue Per staff playgroup 9/9: Steer test 3/5 with water and 0/5 with can. Good gate greetings. Play bows and handler oriented. Per staff playgroup 9/6: Steer test 4/5 with both water and can. Slow entry into the yard with tucked tail. Moving away. Handler oriented. With more time in the yard began to play. Per owner surrender notes 9/5: Owned for 3 months, surrendered because owner couldn't handle him. Described as friendly but high energy. Housebroken and crate trained. Knows some commands and walks well on leash. Eats dog food and table food, and his favorite \"toy\" is shoes. Owner reported that he's not friendly toward strangers (see 9/20 clarification above), with no known history around children, cats, or dogs. Ideal home would be someone young who has time for him. -- Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
