Mercedes

Mercedes is an adoptable female American Staffordshire Terrier looking for a home at Palm Beach County Animal Care & Control in West Palm Beach, Florida. She is a young adult and large in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to other. Adopting Mercedes, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Intake Info: Mercedes is a beautiful 4-year-old girl who was owner surrendered in May this year. She went to a 2-week foster in June while she recovered from CIRD and went to a Foster2Adopt home in September. The foster returned her after 2 weeks, stating that Mercedes' medical issues were too much for her to handle right now. Medical: Mercedes has had multiple episodes of CIRD in shelter and has had multiple episodes of pododermatitis (inflammation of paws and toes) likely due to underlying allergies. Will likely need more individualized treatment plan for allergies. Also reported of stertorous breathing, may have components of brachycephalic airway. Currently on treatment for CIRD. Spayed, vaccinated and heartworm negative. HS-3. Behaviors Observed: Mercedes is a friendly, affectionate girl who is easy to handle, enjoys pets and the pool, knows 'sit,' takes treats gently, and may be housebroken. She enjoys activities such as fetch and enrichment and can be redirected with treats. However, she is uncomfortable with close interactions with other dogs and often displays stiff body language, lip licking, and sharp corrections when approached. While she has successfully passed other dogs on walks without reacting, she may react to dogs barking or lunging from kennel fronts. Mercedes is recommended for a single-dog household, and further dog introductions and playgroups in the shelter are not recommended at this time. Foster Notes: Friendly, loving girl who is housebroken, crate trained, ok when left alone, enjoys walks and cuddling, knows 'sit', good with younger children but not with other animals (snapped at a cat she saw outside), no protective tendencies and is good when meeting new people. Request to Rescues: Mercedes is a gorgeous girl who, through no fault of her own, has been here for five months and was returned from foster. She needs a rescue who can find her the right home with no other animals, and where she can see a vet to assess and make a treatment plan for her medical issues. Her needs exceed our capacity for care and her behavior means she cannot get the enrichment she needs in the shelter. She needs to leave before her behavior declines.
