About Poka Dot

Poka Dot is an adoptable female Pit Bull Terrier looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is fully grown and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 3 days left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Poka Dot, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Poka Dot ACCT-A-263577 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Poka Dot must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 28TH at 10AM. Should Poka Dot's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Poka Dot is a sweet, approximately 2-year-old girl who came to ACCT Philly as a stray brought in by police on October 2nd. Although the shelter environment can be overwhelming for her, Poka Dot has shown a softer side as she becomes more comfortable. She is very treat motivated, knows sit, and enjoys affection once she feels safe. She has been described as wanting love, and she has shown interest in chasing toys and leaning in for cuddles during time outside her kennel. She does best with a gentle approach, slow movements, and tasty treats to help build her confidence. She has also had some good dog interactions, appropriately sniffing other dogs and disengaging nicely during meets. Due to her length of stay, Poka Dot is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter who can give her the time and support she needs to settle in and let her sweet personality shine. Body low to the ground. Wide eyes and not moving. Nose to the ground and laid down. When the yard became calmer she did move around the yard a little. Per walksheet 10/18: Low energy. So sweet! Knows sit. Wants love. Per walksheet 10/16: Low energy. Mildly shy. Per volunteer 10/13: She is still nervous come out of her kennel but once leashed she walked easily to the play yard. She had an uninterested fence meet with Handsome, tail still tucked as she walked by. She showed some positive interest in him later in the visit. Once in the yard she relaxed and even gave me some tail wags. She showed some interest in chasing toys and leaned in for cuddles. Per staff 10/10, playgroup: Steer test 4/5 with water and can. Tucked tail, sniffing from a distance. Mingled around the yard. Per staff 10/9, playgroup: Avoidant. Moves away from interactions. Exit searching. Per staff 10/7: Poka Dot was briefly in my office while a volunteer cleaned her kennel. She is very treat motivated (fresh pet is her fav). The volunteer noted that she is shy so I did not attempt to handle, but won her over with treats. Per staff 10/6, playgroup: Steer Test 5/5 with water, no can due to fearfulness. Fearful and tail tucked at the fence. Slow entry, handler oriented, turning head away when other dogs came over to sniff. Per staff 10/6: Kennel Presentation: At the front of the crate with wide/soft, ears to the side and tense body. Offered a treat and she ate it. Leash Skills: Dodged the leash when I presented it. Needed a treat lure to leash. Eyes darting, tail tucked and ears to the side while walking through the kennels. Sociability: Flinches with fast movements. Go slow. She is food motivated. Did not get to do too much handling since I was bringing her to playgroup. Dog Interaction: Was in playgroup. Return to Kennel: When transitioning from clip leash in playgroup to slip lead the staff member had to crouch down and baby talk to her. They made the loop fairly big and she began pacing again. She went through the loop, then failed backwards when the leash began to tighten. Offered some pepperoni to unclip the leash. Went slowly and her tail was tucked. Returning to kennel she needed a treat lure and slip clip method. Color Level: Blue Per staff 10/5, playgroup: Steer test 5/5 with water and can. Tail tucked, ears back and moving away. Staying close to the fence line. Small lip curl at dogs who kept coming up. Per volunteer 10/3: Poka presented at the back of her kennel with her ears forward, whale eyes, and a neutral body. I scattered some treats toward the front of her kennel, which she happily ate. Once she approached, she was easily leashed. Throughout the kennel area, Poka remained very nervous. She had a tucked tail, wide eyes, and frequently looked back at us with each step we took. She walked cautiously and appeared unsure of her surroundings. In the yard, Poka continued to be nervous, displaying a tucked tail, whale eyes, neutral body, and forward ears. The longer we spent together, the more she began to loosen up and relax. She took treats nicely and began to show more comfort with her surroundings. She whined excitedly when other dogs passed by. With additional time, Poka allowed all handling, although she was somewhat flinchy with touch and occasionally lip-licked. During the photoshoot, she tolerated me putting Mickey ears on her. She was not comfortable with wearing a tutu and would move away when I attempted to put it on, so I did not push her past her comfort level. Poka had a few good dog meets and did very well. She appropriately sniffed the other dogs and disengaged nicely. Poka walked nervously through the kennel area on the way back to her crate. Once we reached her kennel, she was hesitant to go back inside despite treats and some leash pressure. I ultimately picked her up and placed her back into her kennel.
