In the care center, Malcolm has shown fearful and defensive behavior around leashing, including retreating to the back of his kennel, growling, baring his teeth, dodging the leash, and snapping at it when handlers attempt to leash him. Malcolm has shown some improvement over time and, once leashed and outside of his kennel, is able to walk calmly but is still highly fearful and anxious in the care center despite best efforts to keep him comfortable. Medically, Malcolm is apparently healthy. Malcolm was brought to the Care Centers as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. In the Care Centers, Malcolm has displayed significant fearful behaviors, including growling, baring his teeth, and refusing to exit his kennel when staff attempt to remove him. Although he has shown interest in high-value treats, he will stop eating when staff reapproach, suggesting that he remains uncomfortable with close interactions. Due to his fearful behaviors, Malcolm is recommended for placement through a New Hope Partner who can provide a supportive environment and address his behavioral needs using positive reinforcement-based training.
