Sandy

Sandy is an adoptable female Pit Bull Terrier looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is fully grown and large in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with just one day left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Sandy, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Sandy ACCT-A-258423 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Sandy must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER or ADOPTER by MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7TH at 10AM. Should Sandy's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Sandy was spotted walking through a neighborhood, and our officers were called to safely bring her to ACCT Philly on August 12th. She was understandably frightened , tucking her tail, pinning her ears back, and crouching low as she was approached, but she allowed herself to be leashed and safely loaded for transport. Since then, Sandy has really come out of her shell and shown us what a sweet, affectionate girl she is. She loves people, happily leans in for pets and attention, and takes treats gently. She's easy to leash, knows sit, and has been a joy for staff and volunteers to spend time with. Sandy also enjoys getting outside and has shown a social side with other dogs, though she can pull on leash when she sees dogs that she wants to meet. She's an energetic, playful girl who enjoys stuffed toys and would likely love having plenty of opportunities to run and explore. She's ready for a family who will appreciate her sweet, affectionate nature and give her the chance to enjoy life outside the shelter. Due to her length of stay, Sandy is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. Per volunteer 8/30: Sandy was sleeping on her bed every time I walked by. I tapped on the kennel door to wake her and she walked over and was easily able to be leashed. In the parking lot, this girl was on a mission, she does pull on the leash so a harness may work better for her. I signed her up for the running team to see how she does as she seems like she would enjoy a run! In the play yard she was interested in stuffed toys. She also would put her paws up for pets and attention. She knows sit and takes treats gently. She was easy to go back into her kennel. I enjoyed my time with this sweet girl! Shuffling, relaxed. Later, began nipping/mouthing at Bolt when he entered the pool. Removed from yard shortly afterward. Per staff 8/28: Medium energy. Sweetheart. Big girl but playful. Per volunteer 8/21: Low energy. Very good girl. Pees a lot - not sure if she's uncomfortable. She's very sweet and allowed pets. Per volunteer 8/19: Medium energy. Good girl. Tolerant. Per volunteer 8/17: Medium energy. Has recall. Enjoys physical affection. Showed mild interest in other dogs. Puller. Per staff 8/17: Low energy. Per volunteer 8/16: Medium energy. Very good and easy to manage overall. Did get super fixated on a small dog in a yard (hard pulling, panting) and couldn't be redirected. Per staff 8/16: No issues, medium energy. Had a good dog meet in playgroup. Per staff 8/16: Kenobi and Sandy fence meet, ears back, high tail, sniffed through the fence then moved away. Per staff 8/16: Meeting Kenobi, tolerant and avoidant. Per staff 8/16: This sweet girl was so excited when she realized it was her turn to get out of her kennel and head outside. She pulled just a little on the way out. Once we got into the yard, Sandy showed us just what a happy, social little lady she is. She happily accepted some pets, but there was something much more exciting happening in the yard next door, another dog. Sandy spent so much of her time running back and forth along the fence, trying her absolute hardest to get the other pup's attention. Watching her bounce around with her loose, wiggly body and happy little tail going, hoping to make a new friend, was seriously the cutest thing. She was a little enthusiastic when taking treats, but otherwise this girl was an absolute dream to spend time with. Sandy is just a happy, lovable girl who seems so ready to get out of the shelter and start enjoying life with a family of her own. Per staff, playgroup 8/16: Steer test 1/5 with water and 2/5 with can. Good greetings. Tolerant. Moves away and mingled around. Per volunteer 8/15: Low energy. Such a sweet girl! Loves to explore and check at the area but also seemed to enjoy back scratches and talking. Very easy to walk! May be potty trained, went immediately when we walked outside. Per volunteer 8/15: Low energy. Sweet. Easy to handle. Pulls a bit. Per staff 8/14: Sandy had a dog meet with Buck G. Fence greeting, mid to high tail wag, ears back, Buck G moved away on his own. In the yard, loose body, loose jaw, ears back, mid-high tail wags, went up to sniff Buck G and moved away on her own. Allowed Buck G to also come up and sniff. Per staff 8/14: I accompanied a new volunteer while they took Sandy out. She was very patient and easy to be leashed, mild to no pulling on leash, peed as soon as we went outside, allowed petting in the yard and just wanted to sit on her handler's feet for pets. She sat for treats and took them gently. Another volunteer walked a dog into the adjacent yard and she perked up and had a high wagging tail, loose body, and seemed like she wanted to play. She was easy to return to kennel. Per volunteer 8/14: Low energy. Easy walker. Met other dog through fence and did good. Knows sit and possibly lie down. Per volunteer 8/14: Low energy. Easy walker. Gentle. Likes other dogs. Per staff 8/13: Kennel Presentation: Sitting on her bed, came to the front with soft eyes, loose wiggly body, mid level tail wags. Took a treat gently through the bars. Leash Skills: Easy to leash and came right out. Walked loose leash, mid to low tail wags, ears back, loose body. Sociability: Came over when I sat down, soft eyes, ears back, loose wiggly body, mid level tail wags. Allowed all handling with the same body language. Remained next to me for a few seconds afterwards before sniffing around. Took treats gently, knows sit. Dog Interaction: Met Inspector Gadget, ears back, loose sweeping tail wags, was sniffed, easy to move away by calling. Return to Kennel: Walked back loose leash, stopped outside her kennel for a second then hopped in and leash was removed by hand. Color Level: Green Per staff, playgroup 8/13: Steer Test - Water 3/5, Can 0/5. Did not can test due to being fearful. Very shy/fearful coming into the yard with tail tucked and ears back. Tail loosed a little with some time. Good mingler. Per volunteer 8/13: Low energy. Easy to leash, walk, return. Per staff 8/12: Retrieved into yard more while approaching. Tucked tail, pinned ears back, crouched frozen body position.
