Fairy

Fairy is an adoptable female Bullmastiff looking for a home at Maricopa County Animal Care & Control - West in Phoenix, Arizona. She is fully grown and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 4 days left, listed due to behavior. Adopting Fairy, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.

Memo 9/23/2026 09/23/26 15:10 Canine is exhibiting heightened sensitivity to handling, resulting in concerning responses. Placement with a New Hope Partner is needed by close of business 9/28/26 to provide support and reduce the likelihood of behavior progression. May be at risk for euthanasia 9/29/26 or sooner if warranted. Intake 9/17/2026 09/17/26 12:25 BJacques Per Peoria ACO, A5171773 and A5171766 were found at same call but impounded on different days. Evaluation Comments (Observations from our staff and volunteers) 9/22/2026 Dog did not eat. Day 1 9/22/2026 Dog was in back half of kennel, offered treats scattered onto ground then stepped to side out of dog's view. Slowly closed kennel divider as dog would enter into front half of kennel. Continued to walk to gate while handler would kneel down with more treats in hand, would sniff treats through gate, did not eat them. Opened kennel gate & leashed dog without issues. Walked to small PY while keeping tail tightly tucked under body, ears pinned back, hackles raised along spine & head lowered. Once in PY, handler would attach an extended leash then dropped leash. Dog would stand facing handler, whale eyed, panting heavy with mouth wide opened, looking around surroundings while keeping tail tucked under body. Would alternate from ears being pinned back to neutral positioned. Offered treats in hand, would not be interested in treats. Slowly would extend hand to pet dog on head, would pin ears back while being whale eyed & lowering head keeping silent & not changing placement of feet. Handler would walk around, dog would remain in same position while looking around with whale eyes, trembling body & ears pinned back. Returned to chair to sit, dog would slowly take a step forward towards handler then turned head to look around surroundings. Handler would pick up leash & adjusted leash stopper without issues. Slowly pet dog on side of body, dog would do intense skin crawling while raising hackles again. Walked back to kennel building slowly with verbal coaxing, keeping ears pinned, tail tucked, whale eyed, hackles raised & head lowered. Entered into kennel & removed leash by use of pre-attached clip leash. 9/21/2026 Outside for AM cleaning laying at front of kennel with wide eyes, stiff body, whale eye, low growling at handler with heavy trembling in back legs. Retreated to back corner of kennel when opening door, pancaked while low growling, little eye contact with handler but whale eye, able to slowly approach and lasso with no issues. Exited kennel slowly, tail tucked, turns to look at handler throughout walk to small play yard with stiff body, startled by reactive dogs in passing, defecated in middle of walk way. In yard handler did not drop leash all of evaluation, dog was wary of handler throughout, heavy wide mouth panting, stiff body, clenches jaw and stiffens up when extended hand, quick low growls felt thru leash. Skin crawled heavily when brushing end of leash on body, head flips and hard stares but settles if handler guides dog to walk. Retreated to corner of yard and pancaked facing away from handler, turns head quickly for fast movements or any time handler moved. Walked dog to play yard exit and able to attach clip leash as dog was distracted.
