Harpo
Pit Bull Terrier
We do not know what happened to Harpo
The date this shelter listed for Harpo has passed. Shelters often push these dates back, and many pets are adopted or pulled by a rescue first, so Harpo may still be there. The shelter can tell you.
Harpo is an adoptable male Pit Bull Terrier looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is fully grown and medium in size. He is listed on the shelter's euthanasia list, listed due to lack of space, and that date has now passed. Shelters often move these dates, so Harpo may still be waiting. The shelter can confirm.
Harpo ACCT A-256022 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Harpo must have confirmed placement with an ADOPTER or RESCUE PARTNER by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16TH at 10AM. Should Harpo's medical or behavioral status change, his urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Harpo is a high-energy, bouncy guy who first came to ACCT all the way back in July, before being adopted out three times, and three times returned. While we think that Harpo would benefit from structure and some work on his manners, it's very clear that Harpo is all about snacks, playing fetch, and most importantly: the good vibes. We think that his goofiness will make training a blast, but he would also make an excellent running partner if you're looking for an adventure buddy. Because Harpo has earned a lot of frequent flyer miles, we have ample videos of him doing what he does best! This gives us the opportunity to showcase his abundance in a way that makes his future person confident they are up to the challenge. You can view this canine version of rugby in the videos below, and see if you can match Harpo's energy and commitment to chasing tennis balls. Good greetings, tolerant, mingled around. Exchanged some play bows and quick moves with some dogs. Per staff 10/6: Came running to the front of his kennel with loose wiggly body. Tried to push out leashing, used a treat to leash. Pulled strongly on leash, loose body, mid tail wags. Met Lila, sniffed and was sniffed, handler oriented. Would jump up on me and can reach up to face level, short armd the leash and tossed a treat. Very food motivated. We played fetch for a while, by the end he was bringing the ball back and dropping it at my feet! Loved running around with a stuffy. Walked back pulling mildly, and hopped right into his kennel. Leveling down to blue. Per staff 9/26: Approached his kennel, he was at the front of his kennel, wiggly body, loose tail, was easy to leash, pulls moderate on the leash. In the yard he absolutely LOVES to play with the toys and loves treats (he's a little snatchy). Once the initial Energy is gone he actually loves pets and leaning into me for whole body rubs). Less pulling back to kennel, he hopped right in his kennel. Removed the leash by hand. Per volunteer 9/24: Fun playful dog, Harpo is athletic and loves to chase toys and balls and run around the yard. He seems to know sit but needs to get those zoomies out before you can really get his attention for that. 9/20 per VolunteerThere were notes that Harpo tried to push out of kennel, so I tried to throw some treats, which did work, and I was able to stick my leash in there safely and lasso him. Loves to run! Good for run club. Behavior Evaluation 8/8: Kennel Presentation: At the door, mid tail wag, soft eyes, standing up leaning on door to get out, and loose body. Did not take fresh pet treats when thrown into kennel. Leash Skills: A little jumpy to leash but still easy coming out of kennel. Pulled a little coming out of kennel but it was also his first walk of the day. Sociability: Allowed all sorts of pets and handling. Would come up to you on his own with a toy in his mouth and would also come over if you called his name. Play: Loves fetch! Threw some toys around in the yard and he chased after them. Dog Interaction: N/A Return to Kennel: No pulling going back to the kennel but needed magic carpet ride at his kennel door. Color Level: Suggesting to remain at exp blue due to not going back into kennel/needing two people. Per volunteer 8/1: Was sleeping in his bed when I approached and didn't come to the front until I started to take my leash off. He was trying to push out with his nose, so was a little difficult to leash. When I finally got him leashed he jumped right out of the kennel and pulls quite a bit on the way out. Would recommend a harness. In the play yard he is very affectionate and pretty jumpy trying to solicit attention. He is in the isolation area so likely doesn't have much interaction or exercise and might be more energetic than usual. When I was taking out my treats, he did try to muzzle punch me a few times, however kept his body loose and wiggly. He's very treat motivated and can be a little snatchy with them when you are taking too long. Definitely has some puppy antics however very sweet guy! Jumps up to solicit pets from you. Hesitated to go back into kennel heavily and I had to drop treats then used leash pressure to go inside. 7/26 Behavior Evaluation Kennel Presentation: At the front of his kennel jumping up on the door with ears back, loose body, mid tail wags. Took a treat snatchy through the bars. Leash Skills: Tried to push out when leashing, tossed some treats back which he went for and when he came back up, able to leash easily with a treat. Pulled moderately on leash, mid tail, ears back. Sociability: Would come over when I called to him in the yard and jump on me with ears back, soft eyes, mid tail wags. Stopped when I moved away. I moved over to the bench and he came over and jumped up on me with the same body language, tossed a treat and he hopped down then returned and jumped up on the bench where he allowed all handing with mdi to low tail wags, ears back, loose body. Very snatchy with treats, tossing them is best. Jumped up on me again and was sniffing into my treat pouch. Play: Would chase the toys then lost interest. Dog Interaction: Met Merlin, mid to high tail fat wags, ears back, pulled moderately towards him. Able to move away with calling and light leash pressure. Later into the meet attempted to mount. Return to Kennel: Walked back pulling mildly, clipped leash due to walk sheet notes of being hard to return. Stopped outside his kennel and pulled back on leash, went to his kennel for a treat and did not hop in. Needed leash pressure to return and tried to push back out once in, removed leash with the clip method. Playgroup 7/25: Mildly steerable with water (1/5) moreso with shake can (4/5). At gate: excited, ears up/back, mid/high tail wags, loose mouth, panting, shuffling around. Mounted Tice asap, received an appropriate low growl after the second attempt. Mounted Pluto also. Pluto tolerated the several first few attempts, gave a clear growl eventually. Harpo heard and eased off a bit, but was steered away the rest of the way by staff. Continued trying to mount but remained responsive to being steered by the spray bottle. Per staff 7/18: Dog is very gregarious, very playful, highly energetic. Will jump on you, will pull you. - Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
