Pookie
Pit Bull Terrier (mix breed)
Urgent: 3 Days Left
Scheduled: October 19, 2026
Reason: Lack of Space
Pookie is an adoptable female Pit Bull Terrier looking for a home at Philadelphia Animal Care and Control in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is fully grown and medium in size. She is currently on the shelter's euthanasia list with only 3 days left, listed due to lack of space. Adopting Pookie, or even sharing her story, could save a life before it's too late.
Pookie ACCT-A-262256 is currently considered urgent and at risk of euthanasia due to length of stay and lack of space for incoming dogs. Pookie must have confirmed placement with a RESCUE PARTNER OR ADOPTER by MONDAY, OCTOBER 19TH at 10AM. Should Pookie's medical or behavioral status change, her urgency and timeline for placement may also change. Pookie came to ACCT Philly on September 19th after being found as a stray by police. Initially a little shy and unsure of her surroundings, she has grown more comfortable and is showing off her fun, affectionate personality! This wiggly girl loves playing fetch, getting scratches, and hopping up on the bench to snuggle with her person. She greets familiar people with a loose body, enjoys pets all over, and knows sit. Pookie takes treats gently and is generally good on leash, though she can pull moderately, so a harness is recommended. Pookie has been tolerant of other dogs in playgroup, though she can be a little tense during greetings and is still figuring out how she feels about other dogs trying to play with her. She has also enjoyed friendly sniffs through the fence with a wagging tail. Due to her length of stay, Pookie is urgently seeking placement with a rescue partner or adopter. Per staff 10/3, playgroup: Good greetings. Tolerant. Disengaged when called. Per staff 10/3: Excited girl who loves to wiggle! Greeted me with a loose body at the front of her kennel and I very easily leashed her. She does pull moderately on leash so I would recommend a harness. In the play yard she was super wiggly for handling and took pets from me all over. She was minimally interested in treats and would sometimes take them and spit them out, however she took them very gently. Good sniffs with other dogs through the fence with a wide fanning tail and laid back ears. Per staff 9/25: Kennel Presentation: Laying on the bed when I approached her kennel. Wide/soft eyes and ears to the side. Dropped a treat in and she got up to eat it. Leash Skills: Lowered head when I presented the leash. Treat lure to leash and her tail began to wag. Came right out of kennel. Mild pulling through the kennels. Outside pulled moderately towards the fence line. Sociability: Tolerant of handling, however did not solicit for it. Would come over and sit, food motivated. A little snatchy with treats. Dog Interaction: Mildly pulled towards dogs she saw at a distance with hackles raised and ears forward. Can redirect with light leash pressure or food. Return to Kennel: Went right into kennel and removed leash with hand. Color Level: Exp Gold Per staff 9/25, playgroup: Steer test 5/5 with water. Stiff greetings. Mingled around. Handler oriented. Over corrected when Stormi attempted to play with her. Per staff 9/23, playgroup: Steer test 4/5 with water and 5/5 with can. Came in and went right on the bench. Avoidant and moving away. Per staff 9/22, playgroup: Steer test 5/5 with water, did not attempt shake can. Wide eyes, ears to the side. Head turning when dogs would come up to greet. Moves away. Tolerant. Per volunteer 9/20: Pookie was standing at the very front of the kennel when I approached. I couldn't see her head she was so close to the front. When I opened the door she slowly came over and I leashed her. She hopped out and then cowered a bit as dogs started barking on both sides of us. We then exited the kennels with her in front of me. We stopped for a photoshoot where she tilted her head with the whistle noise. I took her out to a yard where she explored. Initially her tail was low and still with her back a little hunched. As time passed, she stood more neutral. I offered treats which she snuffed and did not take. I offered a toy as well and she didn't play with it. She periodically would follow me and sniff me then walk away. I went to the bench to sit down and she followed and hopped right up and then sat down. She came into my space a few times, sniffing my face. She remained neutral while being pet. Her ears were partially up and to the side. When I stopped petting her she turned to me. See videos of our time in the yard. She was easy to return to the kennel. Per staff 9/19: More interested in surroundings than whoever is holding the leash. Gave a few tail wags, did very quick look backs when pet. Skin twitched whenever touched. Loose body but aware of surroundings. MEDICAL NOTES: Pookie is currently being treated for an upper respiratory infection (URI) or \"doggy cold.\" URIs are contagious to other dogs, but not to people or other types of animals. -- Due to being significantly overcapacity with animals and higher than usual intake, extensions are unlikely to be granted.
